I have a 78 Crestliner 2255 Crusader with a 228 Mercruiser. I obtained this boat back in the winter and really dont have alot of info on the performance.

After making a quick run on Easter weekend, I know that some tune up work was instore. I replaced the Q-jet out with another fresh rebuilt, new fuel pump, upgraded to electronic ignition, wires, plugs, etc., checked compression, serviced drive.

Boat planes well(does take full throttle and seems current prop is caviating). After on plane or while getting boat on plane engine will pull to about 3700 rpm and stops. Speed will not pick on up past 33-34 mph. The current prop appears to be a 19" pitch from the markings on it. It is a 3 blade s/s Mercruiser item.

Engine seems sound no fuel delivery problems. It just seems that a 15" pitch would just put rpms around the 4100-4200 mark.

Thanks for any help.
Ken

Re: prop help

I have some experience with a 22ft wellcraft with the 228, also swinging a 19P (at 3600ft elevation to boot)we can get about 5200RPM in the mid to high 40's with no problem-normal load....with that being said, if your tach is close and the speedo is close, I would say you have engine problems..I think you're real close with a 19P prop. I'd make sure the timing is correct and also that the throttle plates are going fully open.
