In interest of full disclosure I don't know a lot about outboards and over the past couple months have put together an 18 foot lowe jon as a fishing boat. I took it out about a week ago and ran it on the river and everything was perfect. The motor ran strong and solid. The steering and throttle controls and console I installed all worked great. Today I just wanted to run it around a little more before I ventured too far from the house to fish and I launched it in the river and it started right up. When I started to go upstream the motor seemed strong and fine at lower rpm's but as I started to build speed it did not want to move. The motor sounded like it was revving up but wasn't pushing the boat. When I backed off the throttle it seemed to be fine again......I got home and put the muffs on the motor and it seemed fine. It engaged fine and seemed to run strong when I put it in gear and gave it gas. Now I did connect the throttle and shift cables myself and it was the first time I have done it. When I checked everything out it seemed like it was fully engaged in gear.......any suggestions?????

Your description sounds a lot like a bad prop thrust hub. Did you try reverse also with similar results? If so, then I'd remove the prop and check the thrust hub. Usually readily apparent that it is shredded. Fairly cheap fix, though. Also could be fishing line, etc wound around inside it making similar symptoms.

Re: Prop issues???

Ok so I started to take the prop off today(never done it before) and it is stuck on there. I have some nut and bolt penetrator sitting on it now. Would this have anything to do with my problem?
