prop keeps wearing on housing, looking for diagram of prop shaft setup

it seems something was left out on inner part of the prop shaft the prop has like an 1/8 inch of play thus causing wear on lower unit housing. wondering if i'm missing a washer er something 1989 15 hp mercury 2cyl serial#oc181987

Plug in your ser # and away you go.<br /><br />HTH & Good Luck with the repairs............ed<br /><br />P.S. the prop bears against a thrust washer, make sure you have the proper washer on the propshaft or the prop may grind on the gearcase as you have experienced.

I had a good friend with the same problem. Had the wrong thrust washer. His is a bit newer 9.9Hp, but basically the same motor. It could have one of two gearcases with different propshafts. They use the same props, but different thrust washers. Unfortunately the serial number won't tell which one you need.
