Prop problem. Help needed please.

Hi
My engine is a 1980 Johnson 55. J55EL80C

My prop (11 3/4 X 17), has quite a lot of movement along the shaft. I can slide it back and forth about 3/8 of an inch.
I've taken it off and noticed that the rear thrust bushing is in place, but the front thrust washer is missing.

I have tried to pack out the gap between the prop and the nut with normal washers, but they just come up against the splines on the shaft, and the prop still moves back and forth.

Should the splined part of the shaft be sticking out proud of the actual prop as you look at it? Mine shows about a half inch of splined section when the prop is pushed all the way back against the thrust bushing.

Could I have the wrong sized prop or something, or is the proper thrust washer designed to fit over the splines on the shaft? My manual doesn't show these parts in any detail.

Thanks in advance for any advice.
Steve

You are missing the washer that goes in front of the prop. It is notched to fit over the splines or you have the wrong thrust washer behind the prop....

Thank you for the very quick replies. If the washer is notched, then all makes sense! I just couldn't see how the washer would work if it wasn't notched.

Thanks again.
Steve
