PROP PROBLEMS

Just repaired a 73 Chrysler 105 hp that was running great a month ago. Took it out and hit some shallow water and now the prop won't spin. Spins fine when out of water when I flushed the motor. Another guy at the ramp took a look and a spin and said he thinks I need another prop key. What is this? Can I do this myself or is another trip to the boatyard?<br /><br />Engine runs great, brand new spark plugs so I know it's the prop. I'm a novice boater though and I need a little help.<br /><br />Thanks and good luck to all the fellow bass masters.

should be able to handle this. Pull the prop nut off and there should be a shear pin that goes through the base of the prop. It's made to shear off to save the internals. pull the prop out and put a new pin in. Slide the prop back in place, tighten the nut and head to the lake. Might want to grab a spare to keep in the boat. And tools to replace it. <br />Art

pin was really old but appeared to be working. in fact, it's so old that it was the kind u bend at the end to secure. the pin was secure (though really rusty) but i did pull it out and will replace it. my dad also suggested that. If I turn the prop myself and it makes a clicking sound does that mean something is broken further down?

Was the pin you replaced sticking through the prop nut (cone shaped nut)? If that 's the case, you need to remove the nut and look further. The shear pin artw45 is referring to is straight and is almost 1/4 inch in diameter. It goes through the back of the prop and the propshaft.

Ok, took the nut off and shear pin apprared to intact and was hanging out enough to attach to prop at the ends. Still makes the clicking sound. Everyone I've talked to says it sounds like a lower end matter. With very limited experience, should I continue and look further or will I get in over my head?

You probably spun the hub due to shallow water running. Draw a water proof line on hub and prop. Run the motor. If the line moves you've spun the hub. Replace the prop.

What does running in shallow water have to do with this?<br />Or are you saying that you hit something?

Okay took it out on small lake (without an anchor) and killed engine and started catching fish. I learned that lesson real quick and bought an anchor. By the time we noticed where we were, we had been blown in 2' of water, heavy grass, and moss. I didn't "hit" anything, but my one paddle wouldn't get me free so I did try to get unstuck from the swamp. After that it hasn't been the same. When I took the prop off I dug out some grass that had gotten in there.<br /><br />I know I'm an idiot but I'm learning quick.

Don't worry about being an idiot. Believe me I think I'm a smart guy, but have done some stupid stuff on the water. Launched the boat once without the hull plug. You'll be suprised how fast your boat will fill with water. You'll learn quick. And you'll get tons of good advice here. I'd check the spun hub theory. Also check the oil in the lower unit. Make sure it is not a milky color. Milky=Bad. It means water has gotten in there.
