The prop on my johnson seems to be the correct diameter and pitch for skiing but I have just put it on and the motor vibrates quite a lot at almost full power although if I back it of for normal skiing speeds on the plane it is not to bad. One of the blades has a half inch semicircular piece missing so I am thinking it has had a bang at some time and that blade isn,t quite matching the others to look at. Could the missing piece be repaired and could the average boat yard balance it all to kill the vibrations.

Bigoldboy,

A damaged prop. is doing more than causing vibrations. It is also systematically tearing up your lower unit.

You can have the prop. rebuilt. Any good marina can suggest a prop shop capable of doing the rework. It usually costs less than $100.00

The guy above is correct djonhs........you didnt say how big your engine is, but if you are pulling skiers, you are capable of running 400rpm and higher, it doesn't take much of a ding in something turning 4000+ RPM to have it be spinning out of round and vibrating, you are tearing up your prop shaft bearing and transferring the imblance to your crankshaft.
Get it fixed or repalce it.
I had mine done at New England propellor in Boston.
It was off my Yanaha 225, it was stainless 375 for new, 120 to fix.
They will add weld, then machine it off in jig that fits your diameter and pitch, then balance and buff. When you get it back, it looks like brand new.

Just FYI,

I noticed excess vibration on my rig (100HP) and a cursory look at the prop showed no damage and all blades were complete and the same size..

A closer look showed that one of the blades was twisted slightly.. so one of the blades had a higer pitch then the others and that was causing bad vibration at anything over 3000 rpm...

its worth getting fixed

regards

Franki
