What is the purpose of a "Prop Thrust Bushing " . Is this basically just a fat washer ? When I get a new prop, Im guessing I will need a different "Prop Thrust Bushing "... How to I measure or get the right one? Thanks.

The purpose of the thrust bushing is to keep the prop from grinding into the gear case housing.

Depending on where and how you buy the new prop, A kit will normaly come with the prop from mercruiser, But there is a lot of dealers out there that seem to break up the Hub kit from the new prop And sell the prop for a lower amount of money, Then sale the hub kit assy for somewhere around another $80.00ish, If it's needed, Now you already have a black max prop from mercruiser with the new style hub kit like you will see in the link below, So the hub kit you have on your boat right now will work on your next prop that is as long as you buy a new vengeance prop from mercruiser like you talked about in your other post, But it's really a good idea to have a new hub kit to keep with you for a spare prop in case you ever damage or lose one prop you are fully ready to install the spare prop and hub kit to enjoy the rest of your trip if needed.

The hub kit will include all the parts you see in this next link, Starting with part number 49 on down to part number 45 the nut.http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show...=11210&bnbr=110&bdesc=Gear+Housing(Brave+One)

Re: Prop Thrust Bushing

The thrust washer is NOT just a fat washer. It does exactly what the name says. It transfers the thrust from the prop to the propshaft. The hole in the thrust washer is tapered. It slides down a mating taper on the prop shaft until it can't go any further. The prop pushing on the thrust washer is what makes your boat go. As boat teck said, without the thrust washer the prop will slide forward on the prop shaft until it starts grinding against the gear case.

No need to replace it either unless the new prop causes clearance issues.
You want the new prop to bottom out against the thrust washer with slight clearance of the gear case.
I have 3 different brands of props and the same washer works with all of the props.
