Proper Places to Fish, and Places NOT to Fish

One thing that really bothers me while boating is a spot where people constantly throw out their fishing lines: IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CHANNEL UNDER THE BRIDGE!! I launch up river, and we cruise out the mouth of the river, and in the process, must go under 3 bridges. The first two are very high, so you can pretty much go between any pilings and not risk hitting the bridge with the bimini. The third bridge has a separate railroad bridge running right next to it, with the clearance at probably around 5-8 feet depending on the tide. There are two marked channels to go underneath, where the bridge will swing open and allow much more clearance space. Each channel (one in, one out) is probably about 20 feet wide. On the other side of the bridge is a boat ramp that has a separate fairly long dock that goes out onto the water.

Now, fishermen can cast their lines to either side of the dock, and not be in conflict with any passing boats. Instead, they choose to cast right in front of this channel, which ends no more than 15 feet from the dock, and then want to yell at the boaters when their lines get run over. Now, I am very courteous, and when at all possible, I will swing wide to avoid running over their fishing lines. Sometimes, there is boat traffic in the opposite direction, so I have nowhere to go but straight. I have only knicked one fishing line, and the guy acted like I just shot his dog!! There is probably about 50 feet of open water between the end of the dock and the beginning of the channel.

My question is why do the fishermen not use all of that available space instead of casting right in the narrow channel (with wooden sides, I forgot to mention)? And when they do cast here, why yell at the boaters if your line gets cut? The boats have nowhere else to go, and it is purely an accident.

Re: Proper Places to Fish, and Places NOT to Fish

This ancient battle has been going on since the dawn of civilization as we know it.

I have been on both sides.

Back in college days we used to fish on the break water at Ponce Inlet. We were the guys land locked. So what does the guy in the boat do? He chooses to fish with his boat right near us poe folk...dispicible

the boat people can fish any where else but no.........

On the other hand, If lubbers are going to fish the navigable, federal channel, they should get out da way when boats go by.

I try to slow down and give em a chance and a break from my wake

I have the same problem in many of the areas that I boat in. I try my best not to clip people's lines, but sometimes I can't help it and I just don't worry about it. In fact, I feel less than guilty about the whole thing, because I have to check my prop for wound up monofilament all of the time.

If folks can't use enough common sense to keep their line out of high traffic boating areas, the consequences are on them.

Maybe that is where the fish are. I have a buddy who treats every fish like a $100 bill with gills, he'll toss a line behind boats on a launch ramp (and pretty much anywhere else) if he sees fish or someone else catch a fish in that general area.

I had a hard time docking my boat because the McInbred family decided to vacation at the boat ramp. The girls were laying there sunning, and the guys had their lines in the water effectively blocking the ramp. They were full of attitude too.

If they are outside the channel I give them space. However I also have so much problems with people fishing INSIDE the channel, I do not adjust course or speed on where fishing lines are.

Fishing a ramp area or a boating channel makes about as much sense as playing soccer on the Interstate.

My solution, which always works, is go where "they" don't. That includes, of course, other boaters and other fishermen.

Life is too short to spend it whining about other people.

And the fisherman's question is : why don't those boaters use the launch downstream of the bridge and channel?

JB, trust me, I would be more than happy to avoid the hassle. However, there is only one way in and one way out of the river to access the bay. That route just so happens to go right through this channel. Now, I understand life is too short to be whining about people, you're absolutely right, so I guess I will just start running over any lines in my way, and just act like nothing happened. Maybe after about three or four times they will take a hint.

The other ramp is well out of the way when towing the boat, and also, you are in for at least a 45 minute wait to launch the boat. I have NO problem whatsoever with people fishing, heck, I love fishing myself, I am just wishing they would think twice before they threw the lines out. Oh, and just for the record, anytime I drive through there, the fish finder shows absolutely nothing, and I have only seen a couple catfish get caught there.

My personal favorite are limblines and yo-yos that were set during high water and left to dangle, oh, 'bout eyeball high, once the water level drops.

Re: Proper Places to Fish, and Places NOT to Fish

Interesting thread...

Last weekend we launched and idled thru the cove so we could head out on the lake. At the exit (or entrance) of the cove, there was a bass boat with a guy fishing. The exit of the cove is about 30 feet wide and very shallow on the edges. Long story short, I was about 2 foot away from him when I motored by......and I also told him what I thought about his location he decided to fish in. ;)

I fish myself and I'm not sure why 80% of fisherman just don't care who they inconvenience when they're on the water.

Being one who has been on both sides of the water I can remember the BB days, (Before Boat). I always wanted one but didn't have one so I substituted by getting the longest pole I could find, 15 foot surf pole. Granted, I never fished in a channel or anywhere near a launch ramp. There would be, on occassions, that knocklehead trolling right accross my line.....now the fun begins.....I would in most cases be using 25 test # line with a 6oz. or 8oz torpedo which I have mastered, When you crossed my line and continue to troll in My spot, you have just become the target. After a near miss or bang on the side of the boat you'll get the message. So I believe in etiquette from both sides. I don't swim with Sharks either. :D

Well, bank fisherman often don't have much access to the lake and bridges usually provide good access to the shore. They cast into the channel because fish use channel like a highway. That said, they should know better to reel in when a boat approach or have their line run over. If they don't, I wouldn't feel bad at all.

Re: Proper Places to Fish, and Places NOT to Fish

how hard is it to reel in and let the boat go by? isnt there a no wake rule in EVERY channel? that leaves the fisherman plenty of time to reel up.

there are a few channels on Lake Minnetonka here in MN that get fished out of all the time. everyone reels up when they see you coming and cast back out after you come through.

If they cant understand they are fishing in an area meant for navigation then they deserve to loose a lure or two.

We have a similar narrow channel that you have to pass through to get to our cottage. To get to our place, you have to pass through a narrow (25 ft) channel that is fairly shallow at the edges. Sometimes, you'll get fishing boats that anchor right in the middle and fish. Most people will pull up anchor and move when they see you coming, but some of them don't even move if they're parked a bit off center.

I guess it's not really a big deal, because mostly it's just an inconvenience because you have to slow right down and in some cases move around them, but it does become sort of a pet peeve after awhile.

While not as bad, I've often thought of it like blocking an intersection of a road, because it's the only way in our out of our area of the lake/bay.
