I have an 83 150hp merc outboard, its on a 20 foot ski centurion, a friend of mine was tellin me not to run it over 4500 rpm, when its trimmed all the way down and punched it runs about 5000 rpm, and then with a little trim it hits 6000 no problem, it has a stainless steel vengeance prop, that is a 17 pitch. I also have a 5 blade stainless 19 pitch prop as a spare, im guessing thats for power for skiing, not top end.he said if i put a 20-21 pitch i will get the mph without the high rpm's, then someone else told me they ran their 150 merc at 6000 rpm all day, im confused anyone have any advice? I dont wanna blow it up, the motor is a black max motor.

Re: Props???

im not sure but i would think it is at least 5500, 5000 sounds low to me, my chryslers range is 5000-5500

Re: Props???

4,500 isn't even in the max rpm range.
the 150 and 1500 are rated 5000-5500,The XR2 5,500 -6,000.
XR4 5,000-5,500 don't know where yours fits.I would shoot for 5,500 unless an expert here suggests more. Usually an increase in pitch would be to increase top end assuming the motor can turn it up.But going to a 5 blade adds drag so almost assures not turning it up far enough.I would try the 19 and report the results back to us with a little more detail on performance with the 17.hole shot etc.
