Protecting used transom....

I recently bought a 1972 Starcraft Chieftain 21' Cuddy. The guy who sold it to me did a very nice job replacing all the wood, including the transom, but he painted it with exterior oil paint. I wish he had painted everything with epoxy and I was wondering if it would be worth painting the visible areas of the transom at this point to try and seal it. I'd have to work around the motor mount bolts and the edges where the wood meets aluminum. There would be interior parts of the transom I wouldn't be able to reach very well. Does this seem worth while. Should I just use more paint instead? Recommendations on products?

I think at this point you can patch-paint it up with whatever you want. Unless you're going to pull the motor and seal it by grinding off the old paint and sealing it up in the bolt holes, transducer holes, etc it's not going to make a big difference. Transoms rarely rot out from areas you can see.

If he covered it entirely with oil-based paint, I wouldn't worry about it. If not, paint over the areas you can get to and make sure he sealed all bolts, etc., that go through the transom (3M 4200 or 5200). It will probably last longer than you intend to keep the boat...inspect it regulary, and if its gets spongy, replace the transom your way.

Also just gonna stick this out there, make sure the wood has had ample time to dry 2-3 days:eek:
