I sold my old boat a few years ago and regretted the decision. So a friend of mine decided she wanted to sell her Starcraft boat with a 28HP Johnson Super Seahorse.

I think this is a Jet or a Jetstar. Not sure the difference. I tell ya what though this boat has a lot of potential and is now my project boat.

I will be posting progress on what I decide to do with this boat. So let the story begin.

Thanks guys. I've been reading and re-reading ever since I found out I was getting it on what you can do with it. I'm not sure if I am going to leave it stock and just fix it up or completely overhaul and mod it out.

Jet owner chiming in. Welcome to the forum. If you go to my photobucket page you will find we have almost identical boats. Metallic (?) red over white. And mine was at one time registered in Iowa. Jets have two bench seats facing forward and Stars have back to back folding (?) seats. I went with a conservative approach to the restoration. Left all paint original, stripped interior and made the forward seat with a pass through. Did some detail work and a bit of rewiring/switches. I had a blast working on it, filled up a year with the work. Good luck with yours and I look forward to seeing what you do.

Hi & welcome,
Do you know what year it is? Like bananaboater said, the difference is in the seating configuration.

Here are a couple of pics, compliments of North Beach.

Welcome to the Starcraft fleet gholmesjr:)

You already fit right in with our merry band of tin boat marauders...great place to get some info, ideas, entertainment and encouragement.:D

It sure does look like a Jet from here, tons of potential and options as far as layout and stuff.

Good luck with the rig!

Re: proud new to me 1962 Starcraft Run-about owner

Thanks all.

So I've been throwing around some ideas. I am an avid fisherman and as I've done my research it looks like most folks like restoring the boats. I do want to make it a fishing vessel. My ideas might be blasphemous to some on here, so I hope I do not offend.

Here's what I'm thinking and let me know if you think this can be done.

I want to put in a floor, however I do not have stringers for this. I just have the ribs on the hull. I also don't want to make the boat top heavy so the lower the floor the better. I'm thinking the sub floor would be made out of epoxied wood or aluminum. Aluminum would be better, but epoxied wood might be cheaper.

I want a foot controlled trolling motor on the bow. So here's what I am thinking. Moving the dashboard up a bit on the bow and making the "captains" chair a single pedestal at the steering wheel. The "captains" chair will have the foot pedal for the trolling motor mounted below it. I would cut a hatch to pass the cable through to the chair. I would also build a console to the right of the chair with my wiring, switches and throttle.

I am going to convert the steering from a cable steer to a teleflex system or something a little more updated. Underneath the revised bow cap I would have some storage. I am thinking of adding a fuse block but that would be mounted under the console cap.

Putting the single "captains" chair up front and center and then moving the dashboard would allow me to have two seats in back by the transom with either a small live well (cooler converted) or a cover for the fuel tank. The batteries would be hidden underneath the seats. I will also have two more swivel seats in the middle of the boat.

Last thing I want to do - or first thing - is I want to get a starter put on the motor as it has the bracket for it. I'm running a Johnson 28hp RX-10 super seahorse.

I am not going to cheap this out am going to go for quality, but a little transformation would be OK I think. I have some graphics capabilities and am doing up some schematics and layouts in my drafting programs.

Let me know if you have suggestions or can envisions what I am.

Thanks,

J.T.

Yah JT, I'd be engaging in some questionable behavior with my Jet too. LL and banana have done (are doing) a great job of keeping true to the boat.

For me, I'll be cutting the bow cap out and turning the rig into a side console. My plan (at the moment anyway) is to also reduce the splashwell by about half, it's huge!

Looking forward to seeing your designs!

Cheers!

I like your ideas. I got mine to fish with and it's missing the winshield anyway. Whats the point of having a closed bow on a fishing boat?

Here's my first attempt at a layout. I don't have absolute dimensions on the boat or the trolling motor, but I did look up some dims on the hull and used those are a base line.

Re: proud new to me 1962 Starcraft Run-about owner

Well of course the weekend that I'm back in town it decides it's going to snow. After a week of 70 degree weather the weekend slaps us in the face with 30 degrees and a few inches of snow. Nebraska weather can't make up it's mind this time of year. Anyway. I did get out in the snow and take some measurements.

My main focus is the bow right now and modifying it. The measurement from the tip of the bow to the dashboard lip is 64". I'm thinking I can move the dashboard up 30" toward the tip of the bow to accommodate for a single "captains" chair with console.

I'm feeling real good about this setup. Anyone see any issues that I'm not seeing?

I understand about the snow. Took a couple days off to work on mine (birthday present to myself), and had snow yesterday morning, this morning, and predicted for mon and tue also. Good luck with your modifications and restoring. After today, I think I'll have to take a couple days off from the boat to grow some skin back on my hands. This site can definitely help you out (of the house when the wife sees the bills, and time spend working on the boat).

Re: proud new to me 1962 Starcraft Run-about owner

I stripped her down a few weeks ago, built a motor stand and have been trying for the last week to get the motor running. It initially was hard to pull so I took a look at the coils and everything tested out just fine. Took the plugs out and cycled through the compressions strokes just fine, put them back in and it's hard has hell to pull again. But I did get it to sputter for a second, however I still can't get it running. I have posted in the other sections, but may be someone here has a suggestion.

I've decided to leave it alone. Not going to move the dash forward. Still going to center the steering though. I really want to get this motor running before I put any money into the floor and stuff.
