Pull start - 25hp Evinrude "ARROW HERE"?

I snapped the pull cord at the attachment knot (at the spool) on my 1982 Evinrude 25 hp. I re-tied the cord after re-reeling the spool, but the arrow marked at the outer edge of pull cord housing does not fall into the "ARROW HERE - ROPE RECOILED" area on the underside of the spool. Is it important to get the arrow in that marked zone for the operation of the pull start unit? What is this for?

Also, the original cord is in good shape and strong, and is only about 2-4 inches shorter as it snapped right at the attachment knot - it should be ok to reuse the original rope/cord, correct?

Any insight would be appreciated. Lots of good info on this site.
Thanks. P239

Make sure the pulley is 'full' of rope.Snapping at the knot usually means the rope was too short.A few layers of rope should remain on the pulley when the rope is pulled out.

Thanks DHPMARINE,
Will make sure there are additional wraps around spool when it is pulled all the way out. I think this may have been a factory-length rope - it had that red dye on the knot.

Any idea on what that arrow stuff is for? P239

Yep,the knot end would be original,as the handle end gets frayed and breaks until the rope is too short.

Someone may correct me on this, but the pulley is actually oval, and is timed to the compression of the engine. If you were starting to turn the motor over at the begining of the compression stroke (for instance) it would be hard to pull, never mind pull fast enough to start.

I just checked and you are correct - the spool is oval. And good info. on the short cord. Do you think it is needed to get a new OMC cord, or can I go with a braid of the same diameter and similar strength?

Again, appreciate the help. Have learned alot from going through some of these pages. Thanks, P239
