can you pull it with the plugs and the tester out? My old 63 is a brute with plugs in, but with nothing in you can pull it quite easily...is this a new to you motor? could be ceased :(

Spray some WD-40 or PB around in each cylinder and let it sit overnight then try again. It might just want another day of soaking or it might be really damaged. If it doesn't want to turn over after a soak then it's probably time to unbolt the head and take some pictures.

Never buy a motor without seeing if its freed up unless you are strictly buying it as a parts motor or you know its ceased and get it for like $50. As suggested, try it with the tester and plugs out... then try the WD-40 if still nothing. Hopefully its not ceased.

excuse me for this dumb question but the cylinder is where the spark plugs fit in?

Also if spraying WD-40 frees it up wouldnt that mean that i should be able to crank it by pulling really hard without spraying it?

Yes, the spark plugs fire into the chamber where the gas and air goes after being delivered by the carb--it gets compressed in the cylinder by the piston then the spark creates an EXPLOSION to fire the piston down. That's the basics to how a gas motor works. :)

Depending on how 'stuck' they are, you could break the rope before the pistons ever budge.

Pull the hand starter assembly off and see if it cranks over with the battery. Your motor might have the safety lock mechanism to keep you from hand cranking the motor, if the throttle is set too high.

Also i know that the compression tester is working fine because i also have a 1966 Evinrude 60hp Sportfour and i checked the compression on it and they all came out at around 95psi...btw is 95psi good for a 1966 motor? I heard it had to be over 100 to be considered a good running motor.

Re: Pull start wont pull

compare the length of the end of your compression tester to the length of a plug. ( threaded parts!) seems like your tester has fitting on it thats too long and the piston is coming up and hitting it?

yup that was it, i removed the adapter on the compression tester and it worked, thank God i was starting to worry i spent 250 on a nice anchor...

Ok and one other thing, i tested the compression on both my motors and this is what i got:

1966 Evinrude 60hp Sportfour
C1-95
C2-95
C3-95
C4-95

1969 Johnson 40hp Electric
C1-90
C2-95

i was told that a good motor has to be over 100psi...is this true and are my numbers ok because they are pretty close?

You're fine.

All testers are a little different.

After running it a bit is will come up. A decarb would help as well. Check the FAQS.

BTW....I wouldnt pay 250 for a motor that I dont see run. Ill post a wiring diagram for you.

Honestly this is my first boat, and it came with no engine...when i seen the price of that one compared to ones just like it i went ahead and bought it...not knowing that compression should of been check right then and there or running it in a bucket to verify it was at least a good investment...wasnt one of my smarter decisions for sure...but hopefully i can get this one up to par, so it can act as my backup...im praying that when i finally hook it up to a battery and some gas that it actually turns over...but anyway thanks for your help and that wiring diagram will be a big help because i have yet to order the service manual from ebay and have nothing to go on as of right now...
