The steel one is behind the camshaft I think. Its for oil anyway.

Yes as muc/walt said....steel plug in center is for cam shaft...oil only. You may also see a few small tiny steel plugs...they are for oil gallys. The others should all be brasss!

Just my 2 cents...go with felpro gaskets especialy the pan...they have a one pc rubber gasket that covers both ends all in one.

Good luck!

I purchased a Felpro oil pan gasket and a National rear main seal. Installed both.
Now just waiting on a bilge pump to come in, and the task of cleaning the bilge is at hand as well as all 3 bellows replacement.

Well, the gimbal bearing is coming out and a new one going in.
The old one, turns okay, but has a small squeek to it. Might as well replace it.
Am I supposed to change the housing around it also ? Or not necessary ?
I suppose a new seal is a must.

Any tips or comments appreciated.

Just do the whole bearing as an assembly. When I did mine I called a local shop because I didn't have the bearing driver. They said if I had it apart and buy the bearing from them they would install for free. Cost me $60 for for the whole thing installed.

I found that 409 and dawn dish soap work wonders on cleaning the bilge of oil.

While the engine is out, I would inspect everything. If there are nicks in the ring gear teeth, flip the ring gear. If I had the pan off, I would most likely throw in a high volume oil pump (I do it on every Chev motor I pull the pan on )

The bearing AND ITS carrier must be removed. Use a 3 jaw puller and a slide hammer (a BIG one :D), and that thing comes out without a whimper.. When you put the new one in, make sure the slots face forward (towards the front of the boat).... Merc had big problems with this in the 80's. So much so that they issued service bulletins on it....

Re: Pulled motor, now what ?

Thanks for the quick input guys. Just ordered the kit # 18-21005K. Seemed it fits my application (Gen 2).

Also getting the alignment and bearing driver tool.

Scott, thanks for the cleaning tip. Will definitely try it. As for the oil pump, too late. Already put pan on.
Chris, I will get a slide hammer at the local auto store. They loan them.

Lookin' ahead at the drive installation. Is the Shift Shaft Slide Stabilizer tool absolutely necessary for installation ?
Just wondering if I have to have it to reinstall the drive. Thanks.

I've used it; not being a pro or super skilled technician I try and use whatever will help me with the best chance of success.

Best $3 I ever spent buying that tool.

Re: Pulled motor, now what ?

Planning on putting in the seal and bearing today or tomorrow. Just to make sure I have it right.

the seal goes in first with the open end toward the bearing, and the bearing grease hole gets aligned with the grease hole. The slots in the bearing face out towards the back (stern) of the boat.

Also, do the outsides or insides get greased before assembly ?
