Re: Pulled spark plug wires

if you want to,probably won't matter much one way or the other....I'd consider chasing the threads of the head screws and running a tap in the block threads to clear them as well...omc gasket sealer on the screws when you reinstall the head

Re: Pulled spark plug wires

It seems to be ruining better but wont be able to take it out today unless the wind dies down its white capping. My friend forgot to bring the compression gauge to work. So hopefully Monday Tuesday I will get that. I found another issue. I have an inline gas filter and when it's idling the filter fills with air. About half air half gas. Then stalls out. I'm thinking part of my problem is that. How do I fix that and why is that happening.

I took the boat out today and it runs a lot better it didn't loose any rpms and I ran it at wot for awhile and it ran strong all the time. I will hopefully get the compression test done next week.

I still have a problem with my motor I pull one plug and it runs like nothing happened then the other one it runs but rough. Before. Doi gather head gasket it wouldnt run so it doing better. What should I check next should i pull the fly wheel and check the gap make sure nothing moved after putting new condensers and and the points.

Re: Pulled spark plug wires

Is the cylinder in question the same one that has that missing metal around the spark plug threads?

One other thing I forgot to tell ya. When I took the boat out today. I started the motor and it seemed like it backfired about 5 or 6 times when it was warming up and as the motor warmed up it smoothed out and ran good. I let it run for a couple mor minutes then put it in gear a went for a ride it ran good I was at 4000 rpms going about 16 mph (GPS) but I think it should run faster

Re: Pulled spark plug wires

Did a compression check on both cylinders top 100 bottom 95 it was done with a different compression gauge I borrowed on from autozone the plugs look the same as before top on is dark and wet, bottom one looks clean and wet I don't think it's my head. I was letting the motor warm up before I did the test and I put my left hand on the base of the motor then my other hand on the head to see if it was warmed up yet and I got shocked is that supposed to happen I didn't touch the plug wires at all

no..shouldn't get shocked just touching the head...sounds like the ignition system needs some checking into

Re: Pulled spark plug wires

I shouldn't get shocked even touching the wires right because they are insulated. What should I check now?

Re: Pulled spark plug wires

the grounding points for the coils should be sanded down to insure good contact with the block, the plug wires should be like new with no cracks or worn spots, and I'd go ahead and replace the terminal ends < that's the plug boots and coiled terminal that snaps over the sparkplug end ~ $3.50 per plug at the dealer >..if the boots aren't molded onto the plug wire they just pull off, some wd makes this easier...then cut about 1/4" off the plug wire end so you'll have "new wire" for the terminal spike to pierce...recommend trimming back the wire insulation the length of the terminal spike, then fanning out the individual strands to achieve better contact with the terminal end

Re: Pulled spark plug wires

Could that possibly cause my motor not to run right the bottom cylinder doesn't seem to be firing when it's in it's place but when I do a spark check it jumps a 1/2 inch gap no problem

if it was me and after all that's been said and done, and the same plug is still causing trouble, then i'd go with this...

I just bought this head hopefully this fixes my problem. If not then it takes that out of the equation. I should receive it next Tuesday or Wednesday.

I don't want to but should I order another head gasket? It's about $28
The head gaskets are new as of June 15 th

Re: Pulled spark plug wires

The new head arrived today. (Order it yesterday and received it the next day talk about good service thanks Fishfeatures for your help) Good thing too because the engine stopped running and won't start up again hope it's just fouled plugs. The fly wheel is still hard to rotate by hand so there is still compression. Hopefully I didn't buy the head for no reason.

Went fishing today boat ran good until the last time I started it lost power so I decided time to go back. To the dock. Babied it as far as she would run and then it stopped running for good, still had another 1/2 mile to go so the minn Kota went in to the water and got us the rest of the way home. It took along time.

Going down to the boat tomorrow to se why it stopped running and to put the new head on.

Re: Pulled spark plug wires

One thing I just remembered when the motor died. I took the cover off the motor to look at it and noticed that there was condensation on the front plate where the carb bolts to. Is that supposed to be like that because I never noticed it before. I mainly run the motor for 10 to 15 minutes to where we are going to fish. Then use the trolling motor until I use the outboard to move to a different stop on the lake.
