Hey guys pulled a bunch of parts off the motor today and getting ready to pull the motor out. It is a 4.3L VP, is the power steering under pressure on one side and if I disconnect it at the steering ram am I going to have atf all over the place? Also, I pulled the mainfolds and risers and they have surface rust but look ok, lake use only although I have no idea how old the manifolds and risers are. is it worth it to get them cleaned and if so is there a way to say how much longer they will last. They look pretty good and I hate to replace them just based on age. It is a 96 though so they could be at least that old. Like I said looks mostly like surface rust but I cannot tell.

Superpop,
The power steering lines aren't under pressure, but you can and will get fluid running about when you disconnect them, especially if/when you move the drive from side to side. Best to either find a way to cap them, or at least control the spillage. Just went through that pulling the 4.3 in my boat.
As far as the risers go, too much of a newbie myself to offer any advice.
Good luck, and be careful, those engines aren't light!

Pop, Risers used in fresh water last a long time, say up to 20 years. Look at the rear part of the riser that is under the rubber hose. Is it rusted thru anywhere (not likely). Does it have any deep pitting? If not, it should be OK to use for quite a while.
