Hi all, I would like to know if any of u have any experience on pulling a 460 king Cobra out of a 2655 bayliner (1988) Just need to know how much of the engine i need to break down ( pull parts) to pull it clear enough to remove and replace coupler. I know the basics ie; wire harness, control cables , power stearing lines etc... My hatch is quit wide but can't quit see the bell housing enough to speculate how much room I'm going to need.

start by pulling the drive, control cables, battery cables, exaust boots, wiring harness, misc. bonding wires to transon,if you have the room foward, lift the engine and slide fwd enough to remove flywheel dust cover bolts, rear motor mount, then the coupler.

Re: Pulling 460 ford OMC

Thanks Bt doctur for the reply on where to start on pulling motor! starting this weekend on it. as to where I found a coupler was at G02Marine.com, called and they said they had one. Will double check and order.

Thanks Lilmandavis good info for back up part source!

I'm also thinking just go ahead and repower with a reman marine 460 from US Motors in washington. Ya know' since going thru all that time and effort.

Good luck.

I called Shorts Marine, Doug Russell, and several other places. They said "sorry not available any more".

That's why I did not rebuild the 460 and put it back in. If there's new couplers out there they'll probably be new (old stock). If you can get one you better buy two!

Get yourself a set of exhaust manifolds also. Those don't exist either!

Re: Pulling 460 ford OMC

Thanks Rick I'll need all the help I can get! I just found out that G02 marine didn't have the right one for the 460. I have already dealt with the exhaust manifolds. Had to go with adapters from 460 to 454 and buy new set of aluminum exhaust complete set and do a little mod but work out fine.

My question to you is what would work for new motor as far as what will fit and can I get coupler for OMC out drive?? Looks like I'm going to have a hard time finding a 460 coupler. Hate to have to waist all that money on I put into the new adaptors and exhaust 1200.00 worth! can't sell the boat broken!!

Re: Pulling 460 ford OMC

Yeah I hear you!

I sold my coupler on EBAY about 6mo ago or I'd be glad to send it to you!!

When I got mine all apart and sitting side by side with the 454/Bravo, It looked a lot like I could have used a Mercruiser yoke and a Bravo coupler. I think I could have taken the Ford flywheel to a machine shop and had it drilled to match the Bravo coupler. (Bravo couplers bolt on like a clutch pressure plate instead of using the flywheel studs like the 460)

You may find a new(old stock) coupler. There was a thread a year or so ago where someone had found some at a dealer (I think in FL) that had a few (new/old-stock)460 couplers. I know there's a few out there somewhere.

Your other choice could be to find a 454. In 1991 OMC went to the 454 but you'd have to find a transom plate that matches the 454 I think. I don't know what all the differences are going in that direction. That was going to be my last resort if I hadn't found the Merc.

I didn't follow up on it since mine was ok and I hadn't decided whether or not to even rebuild mine. Once I decided to remove/rebuild my decision was made when the 454/Bravo literally "dropped into my lap" for way too cheep so I pulled everything out and bolted in the Merc. I spoke to many people that thought they could get a coupler because couplers are pretty much available for every other engine/drive combo out there.

Because OMC only made the 460 from 1987-1989 (and sold it until 1990 and didn't sell very many), the after market doesn't seem to be making the couplers. The parts guy at Shorts Marine told me that the company that used to make the manifolds went out of business and never released the patents. Since the patents haven't run out yet no one else can make them either. Since there are not very many 460's out there no one seems to want to make them at all now.

Had I kept the 460 I would have gone with the adapters like you did!

I actually wouldn't have had to do that right away too. My manifolds are in pretty good usable condition having never been in salt. I'll probably put them on ebay next spring .....someone will probably scarff them up pretty quick!

The only thing wrong with my boat was the several flat lobes on the camshaft and then engine wouldn't turn any more than about 4000 rpm.

Other than that everything else was in excellent condition. I just got a Merc deal I couldn't refuse!

I also have the room, the hoist and all the tools so I did it all myself.

Regards,

Rick

**Another choice I also considered was to switch to a small block Ford 351/400 engine and REALLY speed tune it. Couplers are available for them and if you were to stroke a 400 and use the right cam it would probably approximate the performance of a stock429/460. You already have the manifolds now though. ....... I would either consider the 454 option (then you only have to sell the adapters) or just find a coupler.....used or new.**

Re: Pulling 460 ford OMC

Rick, Thanks for the food for thought! I will persue both avenues one being the defferent motor and or both outdrive/motor. In mean time will keep looking for coupler. Somebody has to have coupler collecting dust on there shelf ( which would be somebody that doesn't know what they have) My luck!!!
