Pulling a 305 merc.

Has any one ever pulled a 305 merc I/O before? Can you pull it out with out taking the lower unit off?I am going to do mine next month to fix oil leaks and put the original exhaust back in the boat.I have read the book and it says i can pull it if i have room enough to move it off the drive shaft so we are going to try i guess.

The correct way is to pull the drive, pull motor straight up and out, make any repairs, re-install motor, CHECK ENGINE ALIGNMENT, re-install drive

+ since ya gotta realign it after ya put the engine back in, and ya have to pull the drive to do that, why not just pull it to start with and have it out of the way...

Everyone here with a Merc outdrive has, or is learning how.

Taking the drive off and putting it back on is probably the easiest part of the job, unless you have no clue what you are doing.
Put it in forward gear, remove the aft trim cylinder pin, and remove the 6 nuts holding the drive to the bellhousing.. Pull the drive off. 15 minutes if you have to think about it and drink a beer or 2 to build up the nerve to try.

Head up to the Adults Only sticky at the top of the forum and download the OEM service manuals for whatever year engine and drive you have. (yeah, they change from year to year believe it or not). It's free and then you REALLY know how to do things.

my advice is to have someone give you a hand, they are decceptively heavy.

or make a drive stand. quite a few example of home made ones here on iboats. + a stand helps with reassembly.
they are heavy. and to me they are an awkward shape to hold on to too. a stand cures both these problems.
