Pulling Boat-Need Help with parts list

The plan is to pull our boat out of the water this March. This is typically done for 1 day once every 4-5 years so all parts need to be on hand the day we pull it out of the water. The boat has dual Volvo 5.0's with DP-A outdrives. We will have a Marine Tech there that will be working on the boat but Im going to be buying all the parts. First things first, the starboard out drive has some water in it. We ran the boat for awhile then pulled the dip stick and it was slightly gray(port O/D was fine). No water has been leaking into the boat and there are no noises from bearings so Im assuming theres no holes in the bellows. I would like to buy a complete seal kit for both O/D's that covers everything. Input seals where the shaft goes in, seals for the props, seals for the dip stick and fill plug, seals for the upper end when we take the top off to get the bellows off, every seal that is on those O/D's I want on hand. We will be pressure testing the O/D's prior to filling them back up with oil. Pretty sure the alignment will be checked but Ill make sure.

Just a quick list:

-At least 4 u joints just in case
-U Joint bellows
-Exhaust Bellows
-Oil
-Seal kits for both O/D's
-Anodes for the prop shaft and transom on both O/D's(Port anode was fine but starboard was almost 50% gone)
-Should we have the elbows that sit on top of the O/D's for the water intake on hand?
-What type of hose goes from the elbow to the transom for the water intake? Should that be replaced?
-Ive looked through the manual and cant tell how the shift cable goes into the boat. It doesnt appear to have a shift boot. Anything needed for that?

Anything else? Ill be going with Volvo Bellows for both the U-joints and Exhaust. Would like to get the seal kits from Volvo also. Probably get the U joints at napa so I can take those back if we dont need them.

They call this kit a Complete gasket. Looks like that would cover everything on the O/D, right?

My first question is why so long between haul outs?
Even if it's just for an inspection and right back in my boat comes out at least once a year for service on the drives and every other year it gets bottom paint.

Re: Pulling Boat-Need Help with parts list

Wow, talk about being ready for anything!!!

Being a DIYer, I can't say what is mandatory and what isn't. Replacing the water intake fitting may or may not be needed but they are not that expensive and every one I've taken off, which is two, have been badly corroded. Both fresh water.

I'm also not sure you need a complete seal kit. At 150 buck a pop, ouch.

Are you talking about replacing the prop shaft seals and the seals in the upper gear box, double bearing box? I'm wondering if a mechanic could physically do all that work in one day. You may need a team.

I have to agree with slasmith1, every two years seems right.

I'm looking forward to seeing the pics though.:)

There is no shift cable boots and the alignment is done from inside the bilge. You can check that anytime.

The intake hose from the drive to the transum shield is a preformed hose. Not a bad idea to change those I guess.

FWIW, I would do the pressure test before pulling the drives apart. See if you can find the leaks first.

Your situation is much different from mine. My boat sits on a trailer when not in use. I can work on it anytime I want.

Maybe you know who will join in and tell you what's right.

Yes I would have water the intake elbows and hoses changed for sure. The shift cable runs inside a hose on the inside of boat;it is crimped to a threaded fitting that screws to transom shield. Make sure it is not starting to rot while the boat is out, it cannot be changed in the water. And plan on more than a day to complete the work. 'nutcase

As far as the seal kits go, there are 2, 876266 for the upper, and 876268 for the lower. There isn't a single seal kit for both.

You have "Oil" on your list, be advised, the DP drives do not use oil, they require a GL-5 synthetic gear lube.

Replace ALL anodes, and use the magnesium ones in fresh water.

If you are replacing both bellows, by all means replace the S hoses too. Item #43

The hose connector on the outdrives do corrode away in salt water, not sure how they act in fresh, but for the price, I would sure have them handy, you will need them eventually.

Re: Pulling Boat-Need Help with parts list

Thanks everybody. There is no one close to our lake to pull a boat like this. Usually we have to hire someone from Lake Cumberland(over an hour away) to bring in a low boy and pull the boat out of the lake. There is no place to store a boat like this at our Marina(small lake) so it sits on the low boy while we get the work done. We will be getting it done in one day but we will probably be working into the night. I was out there last fall and a boat came rolling in around 1am after getting serviced. If the boat stays out over night you get some hefty service charges since youve got to pay for the low boy.

Don, I did mean to say Gear Oil, not just oil. Will any GL-5 SAE 90 or 80W90 be ok? We can buy a 5 gallon bucket of SYN Castrol cheaper than we can buy the individual quarts(Thru a dealer we know). Even though each out drive only takes 2.8 quarts it would still be cheaper. And we will be servicing our Bow Thrusters that can use 80w90. Weve also have a small fishing boat that uses gear oil so we will always need extra gear oil.

Ill get all the part numbers together when I have time and post them. Just want to make sure Ive got everything correct. Should help others out down the road also.

Good idea captmello, we will try to pressure check them first. Can you buy those kits to pressure test them? Wouldnt mind having myself one of those. Ill be sure and take tons of pictures along with videos. :)

Re: Pulling Boat-Need Help with parts list

Since that boat sits in the water for 5 years at a time, get some Mercruiser Hi Performance gear lube. It mixes the water with the oil and doesn't seperate out like the standard GL-5 Synthetic gear lube does. Then if he does get water in the drive, it doesn't seperate and leave the lower gears and bearings in water only (rust).
PS: The book might say 2.8 quarts, but I have found them to vary from 2.5 to just a bit over 3 quarts. Depends on how the castings were machined.

I guess I figured your mechanic would have one. I can't help but wonder if you need to reseal the prop shafts and upper gear boxes if they don't leak???

What would the pros do?

I didn't see any mention of impellers. Is that something you do every other year in the water?

Impellers are on the front of the engine on our Volvo's.

Thanks for the tip on the oil Don.

Im assuming he will have one also captmello but sometimes you assume wrong. Ill double check with him though.

Re: Pulling Boat-Need Help with parts list

Don, what is a good retailer that we could get some of that Mercruiser Hi Performance gear lube? We should only need the 2.5 Gal bottle but I cant find a place online that carries that. I guess Ill get 80w-90

OK, here is the list with some part numbers and such.

-Hosex2 875847 Thru Dealer
-Hose connectionx2 854031 Thru Dealer
-U joint Bellowsx2 876294 $64.98
-Exhaust Bellows kitx2 876631 $68.99
-Gasket Kit upperx2 876266 $149.98
-Gasket Kit lowerx2 876268 $127.40
-6 quarts of Mercruiser Hi Per Lube
-Ujointsx4 3860230 Thru Dealer SN 3102102363
-Magnesium Anode for Propx2 876138 $43.28
-Magnesium Anode for Transomx2 Cant find that

How could I cross reference those U joints to napa? Any good online dealers to get the Hose from the elbow to the transom and that elbow from online?

Anything Im forgetting? Not too sure if were going to go with those two seal kits. May just get one upper and lower kit then get some spare upper gear case seals, prop seal, and drain plug+dip stick seals. Hard to buy two complete kits at almost $300 per O/D.

Get off your butt, and offline and go to your local Mercruiser dealer or Walmart and get some Hi Performance gear lube.

Here is a thread on the ujoint part numbers.

Here's a thread for pulling the upper gear boxes to change the bellows, it also has the PN of the orings and gaskets you need. Lot cheaper than the complete kits.

You may not find Magnesium anodes for the transom shield, I've never looked before, but they aren't listed with the transom shield, so who knows.

Re: Pulling Boat-Need Help with parts list

I found that Iboats was $20 dollars cheaper than napa for the sierra ujoints when I was shopping ujoints last summer.:)

I've had good luck finding OEM parts that I can't puchase on Iboats at this site. http://www.marinepartsexpress.com/

Heres a picture of an intake fitting from an '85 fresh water boat. I would expect to change them

Haha, Thanks Don. I had no idea walmart carried that. And we do not have any Mercruiser dealers with an hours drive.

Thanks for the links

Re: Pulling Boat-Need Help with parts list

I would stick with the OEM hose connections. You are staying in the water 5 years at a time, the aftermarket ones are noteably lighter in weight than the OEM.

If your local Wallyworld doesn't carry the HP, you have plenty of time to order it, even if you order it from the guys an hour away.

Re: Pulling Boat-Need Help with parts list

Something else I want to check. For the exhaust bellows, the link below says its for a 500A but at the bottom of the page it says this.

Bellows Kit
Part # 876631
Fits Engines: 432A, 434A, 500B, 501B, 570A, 572A, 740B, DP-D1, DP-E, DP-G, DPX, SP-C1, SP-E

It doesnt include 500A??

http://www.volvopentastore.com/Conn...*****.149129459--store_id.366--view_id.329600

Also for anyone that may be needing some seal kits, I found the upper and lower seal kit on Ebay for $190 total. Pretty good deal I thought. Only ordered one set for the upper and lower since only one OD has water in it. Ill order some individual seals for the other OD(Prop, drain plug, fill plug, upper gear case, etc.). Found some sierra kits for cheaper but I would rather get Volvo. All thats left is more seals, anodes, u joints, bellows, gear lube, elbows, and intake hose.

500A is the engine, not the outdrive. Go with what it says for your model outdrive.:)

When's the big day?

Yeah, but why does it list that for engines and not the OD? It lists a few OD's there too and doesnt have the DP-A OD.

Not sure when the big day is just yet. We called the company that hauls the boats out and they gave us a higher quote than they had before so were not sure. Was going to be mid march but its been pushed back to May for now. Got a lot of other stuff going on.
