Do I need to drain the oil before i separate the upper and lower halves of the drive? On these older boats, where is the speedometer pickup? Thanks.

Well ,it depends. The OMC stringer only has 4 bolts holding it on.But its only a guess cause i dont know what you have.

Sorry I forgot I haven't filled out my signature yet and was thinking I was writing in my original post. It's a '77 Glastron w/ MCM 165 Engine and Mercruiser 165 outdrive.

You don't have to drain the drive before separating it, but it will get messy when they're apart. :D

There is no speedo sensor in the older drives, Alpha One Gen II's have them.

The boat might have a pitot tube for a speedometer, or sensor from the fishfinder/chartplotter transducer, but they have nothing to do with the drive.

Thanks Eric, that's what I was thinking so I'd better drain it before I pull it apart!

Plus when draining watch carefully the fluid that first drains out.
Meaning you want only the old gear lube coming out, not water.

I'd recommend you consult your drive's maintenance manual before you pull it apart! (That would have answered both your questions!):watermelon:

Re: Pulling drive Lower half

Thanks for the link but it's for a newer drive than mine, I have the MC1 I believe, at least my S/N is a lot lower than the ones shown. Mark, I know what you are saying :)!
