Hi, I must pull the gearbox out of the lower unit of my 1982 Johnson 9.9 to repair the linkage. I think the clutch dog has broken. My manual says to do this with a bearing or flywheel puller. I do not have access to either of these and wonder if anyone has any ideas of what I can do remove the gearbox using any other method.<br />Thanx in advance.

Phil, you will need a puller. Most of us use a harmonic balancer puller for flywheels. These are available from almost any auto parts store for < $20 US. Presumably, this would work. There's most likely no other way, other than designing and fabricating your own puller, not a very time/cost efficient way to go.

Kind'a what I thought. Thanx Jim for clarifying that for me. I was hoping to do this today, but I guess I'll have to wait until I get my hands on a puller. Unless, hmm...trailer hitch+chain+tree tied to spindle= ONE BROKEN LOWER UNIT!!! :D :D :D

Phil....if you need to remove the bearing carrier, take a rubber mallet and tap it around a little to break it free. You can use a slide hammer to pull it out. The carriers usually come right out with no trouble.
