That's a good question....
if your vehicle has a spare and you buy new tires do you replace the spare?
I bet most don't
Here's a story, we had a set of GY Duratracs on my son's Wrangler, after about 4 years the spare (never used) had extensive dry rot from being in the sun, never had that on any other tire though. When we put a new set on that Jeep we replaced all 5 and put a tire cover on the spare. Even the valve stem dry rotted and leaked air! So had to replace that (TPMS).
I had the same spare under my 2007 Jeep for 10 years. The alu rim was so rotted I would not use it any longer, but the tire looked BRAND NEW. Decided to replace it anyway and I had a spare Chrysler OEM steel rim which I spray with fluid film every year now due to the dampness here which corrodes everything on the underside of a vehicle if you don't keep after it.
I go to a lot of car races, that are far from home. I will not accept a vehicle with no spare. Since we go out on the beach a lot, all 3 Jeeps have a Viair 300P compressor and an ARB tire patch kit. These work but not every time so you so still need a spare, IMO. On long trips I carry a De Walt 1/2" drive impact gun, impact socket and extension, torque wrench and spare battery for the De Walt. Never had to use it, friends think I'm crazy but when you are on the Adirondak Northway in upstate NY in the middle of NOWHERE, it is a good feeling that you won't be waiting for roadside assistance for hrs.
Farthest ones I have gone to are Montreal QC for F-1 (450 miles one way)
and Watkins Glen for NASCAR (about 210 miles one way). This year also going to Reading Pa, for drag racing.
these are a bit noisy but are good in all conditions, especially snow. good for slimy slippery boat ramps too.
