Has anybody ever put an electric fuel pump on a large outboard? I have bad crank seals so i cant pump fuel at idle coming up on step. Also how much does crank seals affect power output/breathing?

Sure, we do it all the time with performance & race boats but not for that reason. Explain what you mean by "bad crank seals". And why an electric pump would help.

The engine runs like crap to begin with at idle, but it does idle. As soon as you put it in gear it dies or as soon as you try to throttle up. The only way to get this motor to make any low rpm power was to push the fuel solenoid button on the key switch. Once its up to operating rpm it seems to be able to pump enough fuel. This is why i think my crank seals are bad ie. not enough vacuum at low rpm throttling up. I just didnt want to get into doing crank seals yet. Also would crank seals reduce power because the cylinder banks are interfering with each other?

If it runs better by hitting the primer, that indicates a carb problem. If by pumping the primer bulb it runs better, then that indicates a fuel pump problem. I would remove, clean and rebuild the carbs. What led you to the crank seals??

The crank/crankcase seals on old OMC's are pretty bulletproof.

You have carb issues.

Get the carb's right and you'll see a great running engine.

There is NO reason, other that racing, to put an electric fuel pump on an OMC.

If you don't fix the carb's. you'll melt it down-guarenteed.

I just assumed because of fuel issues that it was fuel pumps not pumping. Power wise it doesnt rev out right but I just found out my spark advance wasnt avancing all the way. Also on a different post my compression is only 75-80psi on all 6 cyls

Sled,

You are on a fast "sled" to engine MELTDOWN.

Rebuild the carbs and be done with it.

Otherwise, buy a new engine.

Don't forget the water pump.

It's easy to access the shift rod, while the carbs are off.

Just a hint.

Just clean them thoroughly, blow out with compressed air.

And install rebuild kits, everything to look for will be new.

As long as you , get them squeakey clean.

You'll need to do a link. and sync. , after the rebuild.

just found a missing plug from one of the casting/drilling holes. fixed it with JB weld hope that is my problem. I did the pump this spring. Would 4-6 degrees of retarded spark affect my power alot?

Set the timimg to whatever the shop manual calls for (you have an OEM manual, right?) Don't get creative here; set it exactly what the book calls for.

The Joe Reeves method for link and sync allows doing this without running the engine. Do a seach for that here.
