Re: Putting a Honda Generator inverter in my bilge

I know numerous people who do this but ALL strap/attach the generator to the swim platform.

This should solve the issue of CO2, gas fumes etc while on the HOOK. I.E. if your anchored from your bow, your boat will swing in the wind and the swim platform will be downwind from your cabin. Now if your tied to dock or beached, that's a different story as obviously your boat won't position itself correctly for the wind.

what happens when the tide or current is stronger than the wind ?

Wow, allot of thoughts on this. Just to assure every one, The gen will not be in my bilge at any time. Promise. I hear every one say they put it on there swim deck. When we beach there is allot of water comes over the swim deck with waves and wakes. We boat on the Mississippi St. Louis district Grafton IL. so since the bilge is out how bout I make a platform to put on the swim deck then fab a exhaust that elbows down and into the water maybe quiet it up some although those are very quiet anyway and to keep fumes away from other boaters that beach there also. When we want privacy we have a beach we go to that clears out at night so putting it on the beach there is no problem. And Thanks for the tip on the co alarm. I was going to get one but I didn't really know were to put it.

You may need to experiment some. Re-routing the exhaust is a fine idea, unless the motor isn't strong enough to overcome the increased back pressure. I dunno. I know from others' units that they're darned quiet. Barely noticeable from 15-20'.

The key to using them on a boat is to be aware and tread cautiously. It's a useful tool but potentially hazardous. Use it only when you need it, and shut it down when you don't. Know where the wind is blowing.

Have you ever owned a station wagon or SUV and run it with the rear window open? The vacuum draws the exhaust into the cabin. The same thing happens with exhaust off the stern when the boat's underway or hooked with the bow into the wind.

Hope you are not surprised that everyone is concerned about your safety and those around you. I keep my Honda on the bow and have run through some very rough waters. I have a waterproof cover for it and because it is in a salt environment, you will have to check some of the screws on the bottom that will rust out in short order if you don't take care of it with SaltAway or other salt deposit remover... I have not done it yet but expect to replace all the screws and visible bolts with stainless.

friend of mine with a silverton also runs his jennie on the bow cabled to the rail. mainly cause its accesable and out of the way. one thing to take in account is how often you use your swim step...
