Older motors had a tiller handle that had gears and linkages. Newer motors have cables that go from the tiller handle to the linkages on the other side of the motor. We'll need to know as much as you can tell us about the motor (as mentioned above) I recently purchased a newer 9.9 mercury that was made to be controlled remotely. It has a tiller handle, but the tiller handle does nothing but steer the boat. It has electric start, but no starter button, just a harness that goes to a control box. The tiller handle twists, but that does nothing, since the cables to shift/throttle were connected to a control box. so, if I want to use it as a standard tiller handle model. I have to purchase the cables that go from tiller handle to the linkages on the motor, and I have to replace the harness with a starter button, and I need to order a "plug" to cover up the opening in the lower cowling where the shift/throttle cables were run from the control box to the motor. So, I need to spend about $100 that I didn't expect to make this motor work like an "old school" standard tiller handle motor. Just letting you learn from my mistake.
