Greetings to all those blessed with wisdom! I seek you knowledge and appreciate the education...
I have 1980 Mercruiser 228. S/N 552xxxx. I'm going through the engine and have decided to go ahead and pull the carb. I noticed that the carb vent does NOT bend back down towards the throttle body. At first I thought a previous owner must of swapped out the carb.
I brought it to work and cleaned it off to reveal 17059292. A simple search on here and Google gave me all kinds of info, including where to go buy a reman (with curved vent).
There is also a link on ebay for one (without curved vent)... http://www.ebay.com/itm/190726684278
A couple of threads on here also show pictures of this carb without the curved vent...

I'm convinced I have the proper carb...all the numbers line up! My question is, how important is the curved vent. I currently have a rebuild kit and float on the way from iBoats. I've rebuilt auto carbs years ago and confident I'll do fine. But should I re-think the rebuild and go with a reman or have it rebuilt my a marine shop...and if they do, is it customary for them to add the curved vent?
Last question... If I do rebuild this carb, what do you recommend I use for anti-corrosion? It looks like most shops use black spray paint! I don't think I can get Yellow Dichromate in a can. What are the pros using?!
Thanks for the education!
