Hi,
I'm shopping for a new 8 hp, 4 stroke, manual start, long shaft outboard to power a McKenzie drift boat in salt and fresh water in the bays/rivers of the Pacific Northwest. In my area, Honda and Yamaha are the most readily available brands; so I'm most interested in them.
Anyone who has experience or knowledge re: this topic is welcome to reply.
My main question is which engine is the best buy in terms of reliability, longevity, overall quality, dealer support, fuel efficiency, starting ease, parts availability, mechanic certification, corrosion resistance (using it in salt water !) and any other point that you feel is relevant. I treat my equipment well and am diligent about maintenance and proper care. I want an engine that will serve me well and last a long time.
I am open to considering other manufacturers if they make high quality engines, so any comments there are welcome. For example, my dad had a Johnson that ran great for 20 years under the same usage.
Many thanks for your input,
Richard
