Its my fishing partners motor so we pull it apart Sunday and sure enough its been soaked and corrosion everywhere. Just to make sure it wasnt ruined he wiped the brushes and where they contact (lightly) with 150 grit sand paper and we dropped it back in and applied power. Worked great. So at that time I told him we should stop and get some advice on proper cleaning before putting it back together.

All new seals have been ordered and should be here in a week.
Im sure using sand paper isnt the answer and any advice would be welcomed. Should we soak all the parts in something??

Thanks
Link

Sandpaper is a little course for cleaning the commutator. 400 or 600 grit wet/dry paper or emery cloth would be better. The commutator should be relatively smooth when you are done to eliminate rapid brush wear. Check each segment of the commutator to make sure no copper tracks are made between adjacent segments. Blow the unit out with compressed air, let it dry thoroughly, use new seals and seal it up. Should be good to go.

Thanks Upinsmoke
And I knew that thingie had a name (commutator) :)
Just didnt have the manual here at my place.
I'll take some emery cloth over to him this evening. If the seals come in this week I can see a need to test it Saturday on a little Bass lake. :D
