Yesterday I started this 1994 40HP Force outboard on this 15ft tri-hull I got last week from Craigslist. After some plug cleaning and starter fluid I got the engine to turn over and run (surprised me for a blind sale with little history on the motor) . Only problem is that I noticed right away in my barrel of clear water a sticky brown oil almost like foam that floated to the surface. Also I noticed some of the oil was inside the engine housing after running. Now noticing that it was brown I am not sure where it came from. And after 5 minutes of running the engine over temp buzzer came on. So question 1? Where did this oil come from. 2. Is this normal for an engine that had not run for a while? 3. Also I did not notice any water coming from the engine (where does it drian out from) is it all being despense from around the propeller like the exhaust.. Help? 4. I guess I am concerned about the brown oil in the barrel becuase there was a lot? Another problem I noticed is that my trim motor hums when switching DOWN but does nothing for raising UP. Any help with this? Any help appreciated.... Thanks..

hi, well first off, you should check certain things before trying to start an unknown engine,

1 plugs out and compression test
2 clean carbs
3 check fuel pump
4 check lower unit oil
5 check water pump

get my drift, in a word "service" the engine after checking compression.

As for the trim and tilt, you say it hums when lowering but nothing going up, do you mean it will not lift ? or motor does not hum when lifting ? again simple things like checking fluid level , check lift pump motor brush's

the water should exit through the two small holes half way down the back of the leg, normally a mist or spitting, best thing to do is fit a tell tail, do a search on here for fitting one.
