Hey guys, i've recently been asking questions about yamaha 15hp 2 strokes and i think i've found one i'm going to buy. It's a 2002 shortshaft with approximately 12 hours on it, all were used in salt water. The owner said he flushed it with the ear muff fittings with a hose from his sailboat. I hope smaller style sailboats have hoses??? Anyways, he's the original owner and said he broke it in at 50:1 and runs it now at 100:1. I just read the yamaha online manual and it states to break it in at 25:1. Would this cause improper break in of the pistons and rings and would it cause premature wear, or should i not be concerned? Also, is there any tell tale areas to look at when looking for rust on the motor and in the cooling system? Thanks for the help.

Nothing to worry about, I break in all my yamaha's on 50:1, and then just keep running it on 50:1, if he flushed the motor after use you have nothing to worry about .......

Re: question about breaking in a 2 stroke yamaha portable

Ok guys, i bought the motor. I'm a little panicked now though because after i got it home and packed it inside i thought i would check it out a little closer and play with the gear shifter. Well, i can't get this sucker into reverse. It clicks into forward fine, back into neutral, but won't push back into reverse. Any special tricks? I'm kind of an idiot for not checking that when i bought it. The motor looks good, however it was used on a sailboat and was subjected to sunlight and salt water spashing so it has a little rust on the the exposed crome bolts. The rubber seals on the pull start and shift leaver are cracking too. Anyways, it's supposed to have 12 hours on it. He said the plugs were changed at the 10 hour mark, but one plug has rust on it. We dry fired it in three pulls, idled it for 8 seconds and then shut it down. I never thought i would need to put it in gear and plus it was out of water. Can anyone help? Is there a trick to this or am i looking at an expensive fix?

If the motor is not running it won't shift right. If you pull it over with the rope as you try to shift it should work fine.
Never dry run the motor you can ruin the impeller on no time.Watch the water telltale closley until you are sure all is well.(probably is OK)

Commander, you were exactly right. It shifted perfectly with me just slightly turning the prop by hand. Thanks for all the help guys.

Now change out the impeller.

Really? Change out the impeller even though it was running for maybe 7 seconds max at idle? The motor itself has maybe 15 hours on it. What do you think? Cheap insurance just to change it?

1) The impeller ages just sitting, gets old and hard. Good insurance to change it.
2) Changing the impeller now involves removing the bolts to get at it. Those bolts seize into place over time and eventually become a real pain to get out.
3) Changing the impeller and lower unit lube and spark plugs gives you "ownership". Grease all the fittings and moving parts per the owners manual. Rub petroleum jelly into the cracking rubber seals. Clean that baby up and touch up any chips in the paint and paste wax it. Take the propeller off and look for fishing line wrapped around the hub. Start keeping a maintenace log. You will feel really GOOD.

Thanks Itstippy and Scaaty for the good info. I'll price out a new impeller and i have plans to flush the motor and change out the plugs and gear lube. It got mega cold here now so i'll have to wait a little bit to take it outside and fire it up to flush it right. I wanted to ask you guys what a good gear oil would be. Also, i'm going to run yamalube m2 with ring free. Any better 2 stroke oil i should be using? Thanks guys.

pay no attention to the 100/1 sticker.
it will bite you.
50/1 and be happy.

Re: question about breaking in a 2 stroke yamaha portable

Really? You know i've always run my 2 strokes as per the manual recommendations like my cr250r at 32:1. Everyone that i ride with says i'm wasting my money, but to me rich is better than lean. I know that jetting has more to do with getting the right lubrication and proper burn than the pre mix ratio, but i'll take your advice and run 50:1 because it's cheap insurance.
