question about fusing ignition wires

Hello All,

I am in the process of a restoration and I have replaced my ignition switch with a new one. The new one is a Sierra switch with the same connections as the old one so it is not a difficult swap but my question is that the old switch had none of the leads going through fuses. The instructions for the new switch say to put a 30A on the Solenoid, a 15A on the Ignition and a 7A on the choke (this is a push to choke).

I have also replaced my old glass fuse panel with a new blade type that has a single 12V terminal and a negative terminal and then the fused power comes off a lead for the fuse.

So my question is do I needto get 3 inline fuse holder with the aforementioned fuse sizes or do I tap into my fuse panel? If I tapped into my fuse panel how would I also attach the wire going to the motor wire harness? For example the choke wire is Yellow\Black. On the old switch that went from the key switch to the motor wiring harness, if I use one of my current fuses where would I put that?

Thanks,
Mark

Re: question about fusing ignition wires

All of those circuits are protected by a fuse at the engine. No need to add any others. The fuse protects the +12 volt run from the engine to the "B" terminal on the switch.

Thanks Silvertip. You mention the fuse on the +12 but there was no fuse on that...although the line that goes from the batter to under the console has a fuse so I guess the entire 12 volt buss under the console is fused. Do you think I should run the B terminal on the switch to a fused +12 volt? If so what size fuse would you use?

Thanks,
Mark

Re: question about fusing ignition wires

You have two electrical systems. The engine system is fused at the engine. Thats the "B" terminal. The engine system powers only the engine and gauges. The small pair of wires feeding the helm is the Boat system which powers the fuse panel and all accessories Except the engine and gauges. Again, no you don't need another fuse.
