I am impatiently awaiting my manual to come in the mail. I am looking to replace my controls and ignition for my 1975 75hp Johnson motor model#75ESLR75B. I was wondering how universal controls and ignitions switiches are. I came across a used one for a newer model Johnson/Evinrude and was wondering if anyone knows if it will fit my engine as is. I am particuraily wondering about the actual orange plug that plugs into the actual motor, which i assume is attached to the turn key ignition. I have been tring to access BRP catalogue, however have been unable to bring up the part lists for some reason! Here is the copy and pasted link of the used controls I was considering, unfortuanetly I havent been able to paste it as a link, but if you copy and paste it into your address bar it will take you there

Thanks for any help

Re: Question about Johnson Controls/ignition

why are you replacing, a new wiring harness, and cables should renew it. you could be buying the same problems. those cables and harness look original. he must think that stuff is gold by the price. a cracked foot. the red plugs work on red plug engines. there is an adapter harness, but very expensive.

Re: Question about Johnson Controls/ignition

Thanks for responding. Currently, my key ignition which is found in my side mounted control box is broken, ie the actually mechanism is not working because someone lost the key and tried forcing something else into it, then the box was taken apart to try to fix it which only made the problem worse because now parts seem to be lost or missing. In addition, I have alot of ghost wires comming from every which way(from the previous owner) in my boat and the idea of taking out the wiring now and replacing it with another more simplistic wiring situatuion seems apealing. I have found an OMC control box with key for 50-75$ with the wire harness and thought it was a decent deal as long as it was in good shape, however would like to know if it will match my engine, the guy who wants to sell it seems to think it will, but of course he is selling it to me. Are these things pretty standard if they have the same colour of plug on the wiring harness.
Thanks for your opinion and help

Re: Question about Johnson Controls/ignition

Maybe it is better to just buy a brand new harness and seperate igntion switch?
