Question about my gas tank

I have an aluminum gas tank. I removed it so that I could clean it out. I noticed there's a metal wall about
In the middle. Why? I can't clean the other side because I don't have a way to get to it.
Does gas even get to that side? Just concerned gunk on that side will mess up my newly rebuilt
Carbs.

Re: Question about my gas tank

It's called a "baffle" and it's there to reduce sloshing. That's to say, to stop the fuel from moving quickly from one end to the other while your boat is underway. It also ads some structural integrity to the tank. Sorry, but I have no advice on the cleaning issue.

Re: Question about my gas tank

Just curious, why are you cleaning the tank? Did you find any gunk in there?

From all my research, the only reason the tank would need to be cleaned is if the gas was left and started to go to varnish. And even after then, professional service/equipment would be needed to "clean" it out. Which aint cheap.

I actually just started to work on my tank, i have a 100g aluminum tank which cant be removed. I just started to pump out the left over gas to check if its good or not. It seems good so i decided to add some storage additives and leave it.

Be really carefull when you are finished cleaning out the tank. The cleaners CAN cause problems if they get into fuel filters, water seperators & some plastic fuel system parts.
I would check with any company ....BEFORE.....you use their product . If they require special steps or chemicals, you can plan ahead or use a different product.

You sure your tank is aluminum? That looks like rust.

Re: Question about my gas tank

Someone used thak tank as a flower pot at some time. I saw the gallon markings in the lower right hand corner. Otherwise I have would never believe it is a gastank.

REPLACE ALL hoses, filters & Have someone who is REALLY good at rebuilding carburators do the cleanout & rebuild of it.

Looks like a sick joke to me. Take that picture with the carb. So the guy knows how bad the jets are clogged.

Yes the tank is aluminum and that is not rust. When it dries it powdery. The tank is actually in
Good shape. The bottom is starting to come clean after soaking with clean fuel.

That's a bucket in the pic. I poured old gas out into the bucket so I could pour old into plastic
Gas tank to dispose.

Maybe the white powder is drugs ? Or Scouring powder from somebody else ?

That tank needs to be cleaned by a tank shop. Or maybe just replaced ? Do to problem of EVER getting the crud ALL loose in the hidden section. Could keep breaking loose forever. DOES HAPPEN in old race boat fuel tanks.

Re: Question about my gas tank

The stuff that looks like rust, is the shellac that has come off the sides of the tank from the newer E-gas cleaning the tank for you. This in turn clogs up everything in the system, and can be a show-stopper out on the water. If you've gotten the majority of it out, replace your filters, and run the boat. The ethanol fuel that you put in the tank will continue to clean the inside of the tank for you. If you have an older boat, and you haven't replaced the fuel lines yet, do it now, before you start using the ethanol fuel.

Oh, and don't forget to clean out the screen in the fuel pickup tube in the tank.

Yes, you could have it professionally cleaned, but if you are using ethanol, it will clean itself. Just check and clean/change the filters regularly.

Tank cleaners can be found in your area by calling fuel supply places and asking for recommendations.
