So, couple friends of mine & I bought this 1986 Bayliner Capri on Craigslist that needed some work. I already heave another thread on this forum about some of the mechanical issues, and we're slowly working on getting the engine to run. And even though getting the motor started is the most important task right now, some evenings when my whole "crew" is not here I try to get ahead a little bit with the interior work.
Before we bought it according to seller interior was gutted, new floor put it in, everything carpeted, though few things were left unfinished. Specifically the interior panels on both sides that run from the rear seats to the dash and I guess extensions of the same wall panels ahead of the dash. Also the 'pockets/storage' that goes on the bottom, and center back-to-back seats. All of that was removed from the boat when we picked it up. The plywood in those panels is mostly in bad shape, some spots it has completely rotten away or just falls apart in your hands.

OK, Let me get to the point now....
So far I've managed to cut out all new panels out of plywood. I found all the holes where they were attached to the boat itself, but what's next?

1) Once I re-upholster these panels with new vinyl, how do I attach them without putting screw through the new vinyl? You know what I mean? How do I hide these screws underneath? Or is it virtually impossibly?

2) I think these panels are gonna be kinda flimsy if they're attached to the body only at the top. I mean, I haven't really tightened every screw yet really tight, but those are very long panels. I think they need some kind of support behind them, especially the one where throttle level will attached to. As I mentioned above I don't know how it all looked before they were removed.

P.S. I still don't know how I'm gonna do the seats, but I'm not too varied about them now.

P.S.S. I appreciate all the help & suggestions in advance!

the bay liners had folds in the upholstery....under the fold, is a screw. you never see them...but they are there, hidden.

seats can be tricky......the many contours, and piping,,,,,pull thrus,,,,,make then a more advanced sewing issue than just stapling some vinyl to a board.

but on a scale of 1-10.....i would say re upholstering a capri is about a 4. the really cool thing is that it is one of the jobs that gives instant gratification. even before the panels are physicaly screwed on to the boat.

Woodonglass, I know, I thought about that but I don't I'm nowhere near the boat now.

oops!, that exactly what I was thinking of doing... I looked at the original vinyl to see if there were folds before, but I couldn't tell because they were bad shape & separated where the seams between different colors were.

I found this page (http://www.shareaproject.com/pages/projectTut,p,219,00.html) by someone who did a restoration of what seems to be exactly the same boat. In pic #2 he has some screws in the panels that are very visible; but maybe those were just added on later. In further pictures however none of the other panels have exposed screws. I could believe that some screws are hidden by folds or seems, but to me there don't seem to be enough folds to cover all the screws. Just my thought....

And still need to figure out how to support those side panels from behind.

When I did my seats and bolsters.... The seats had hinges and the bolsters(side pads) I used SS T-nuts and bolted them from behind.

oops!, thanks a lot for the pictures and all the info. That helps a lot!
Maybe now I'll think about adding some colors if I decide to do the folds... :D

heres what youre looking for sidepanel block.jpg
on the rear of the side panel there is a block of wood attatched to the tray part. the block of wood is held tight against the hull with a long machine screw that goes thru the rubrail, thru the hull, then thru the block of wood, then washer, then nut. the rubrail insert conceals the head of the machine screw
side panel.jpgrear side panel.jpgand as far as the screws go that mount it to the side of the boat...like other people have stated the screws go right thru the vinyl and those heads are concealed by the folds/pleats in the vinyl.
i do like the idea of t-nuts so you dont have to put any holes in the new vinyl.
also coat the wood with some sort of marine paint. probably would want to use some sort of exterior type ply as well

You can use christmas trees like they do on car panels. Can't remember what they are really called. position the plywood over its location drill holes through it and the glass. Staple the christmas trees on inside of plywood, upholster them and push the christmas trees into the glass hole. Was a common process back in the late 90's with some boat manufacturers.

That's a great idea. I'm definitely gonna look into that.

I like the idea of creating pockets in these side trim. I think I'm gonna try that too.
