I bought a 1984 Starcraft Islander 22' with 2.5L OMC this year. I put a new floor and other cosmetic stuff such as new seats and other stuff to get her on the water this year, but I plan to do some restoring over the winter. I have 2 questions for the "Starcrafters"..I really love the boat and want to restore her....

1. The foam that is underneath the floor seems to be sprayed in and is somewhat water logged. How do I replace? What material?

2. Want to paint her and what paint should I use and what process to be sucessful.

Thanks in Advance!!!

Re: Question for Starcraft Guru's

Welcome to iboats and um lets see pics check Ok welcome to the eveer growing Starcraft club.

Ok now that thats over :D. The foam is most likely not original if its spray in crap :( you will need to yank ,pull, cut , tear all of that junk out . Then simply go to Homie desperate or Lowes and pick up some sheets of pink or Blue foam board and start putting new foam back in .

The paint most of us have been using good old rustoleum on our starcrafts with good results.

Welcome to the Starcraft insane asylum!!!

Great looking boat!
Ricks right on the melted posturepedic mattress ya have...Gonna have to cut, rip, pull..basically invent some new and exciting foul language:eek:

Is that boat a hybrid of tin and (GASP) Fiberglass??
The top cap looks pretty smoooooth..Can't tell exactly from the pic..

And ya, I guess I also have to agree with mr fast fingers here that rustoleum is ok!

Re: Question for Starcraft Guru's

Guys, thanks for the quick responses...She is Aluminum...When I ripped the floor up, it didn't look like a fun job to rip all of that stuff out, but it will have to be done because I think it is slowing her down. I have an awesome drive train and I don't need any work there (Just rebuilt outdrive and went through engine, Compression is almost new 175 175 176 178). I just got done reading about 8 pages of 2 Starcraft Restorations on here and I am already pumped to do this...So many Ideas...Rustoleum huh??? Do you have to put some type of Zinc Chromate down or anything?? Also, what should I do to plug all the holes she has in her? Rivet them or?? I just Marine Siliconed them for now...I have to replace the transom wood as well...Quite a bit of rot at the bottom....Other than that...Great shape...To bad the previous owners did not take care of her...But I absolutely love it...

Re: Question for Starcraft Guru's

The holes depend on the size :D. northBeach ( who's condensed resto thread can be found in the completed section right below this one ) found some stainless bolts for a chevelle grill that worked outt great in the extra holes on his cap. Otherwise Closed end rivets work well . I have some extra if you need them :D. I had to buy 250 to fill 25 extra holes in the bottom of my hull :D. On the paint if you have bare aluminum then yes use Zinc followed by a primer compatable with whatever paint you decide on . I am using rustoleum primer and paint over a coat of Zinc. Kev I am pretty sure had decent paint which yours looks decent so he just scuffed it up and started rolling on the rustoleum :D.

Re: Question for Starcraft Guru's

I guess decent may be a stretch! lol.It wasnt flaking so I guess it was decent..Just aged..worn, but not to any bare metal spots at all..

I did cringe when I saw you were packing that OMC motor...I will not rain on your kick arse boat, but...(here it comes..)

OMC has been out of business for many years...There aren't many good techs out there that know what they are doing with them...Lots of parts are becoming obsolete for those drives as well...BUT....

There are many OMC gurus right here at iboats that could help you when the time comes..

I personally would be scouring CL & Ebuy (i think i will register that!) for any parts available pertaining to your motor and stash em away...

You will be starting a resto thread.(notice it wasnt a question! lol)

Look fwd to seeing your progress.

Re: Question for Starcraft Guru's

I do have some bare medal spots, but they aren't that big. One by the bow stop from cranking it up and then some on the sides from hitting the docks or whatever happened to them, not sure. All there when I bought it. So should I spray just the areas with Chromate or the whole thing. Most of it the paint is still in good shape, just sun faded. Also, I haven't had a problem getting OMC parts yet. There is a mechanic in town here that is awesome with them and he has helped me out a lot so far. He helped me rebuild the outdrive and new ball gears, impeller, driveshafts, manifolds...etc...Are you sure that the spray in foam was not original? When I ripped the floor up, it looked original. All riveted and had holes drilled for the foam to be added. Most everything is original on it.

Re: Question for Starcraft Guru's

On the paint once you sand it and fair out the scratches just use Zinc Chromate on the bare spots and then prime with whatever your priming with ( if the paint is ok otherwise you may skip the primer before the paint just dont skip the zinc on the bare spots.) The foam may be original but yours would be the only Starcraft I can remember seeing with poured in foam factory and I wouldnt go back with it .

Re: Question for Starcraft Guru's

The foam serves 2 purposes on Starcrafts one is floatation the other is to help support the deck .

Re: Question for Starcraft Guru's

The stuff that is in there has to weigh a ton. When I took the floor out, there was some cosiderate water that had rotted out the floor and I am sure that it is water logged and bogging me down. She goes about 32 MPH at WOT with gear and 4 people. Not to bad for a 120HP..Don't know the pitch on the prop, but if I would guess it would be a 17. Wish I could convert it to Mercruiser, but no possible way for a Aluminum boat to patch the hole from the OMC Stringer drive. So I am stuck with it unless I get an offshore bracket and than get an outboard, but no reason to when I have a sound drivetrain.

Re: Question for Starcraft Guru's

LOL my Jupiter had the more standard Starcraft cooler type styrofoam in it and there were blocks that I am sure weighed 20+ pounds when I pulled them out . I am going back with the pink foam board as it doesnt hold water like the other foams do . I would say 32 isnt bad for a cuddy cabin I have been told mine should do 45+ with the 80 horse Merc hangin off the back of her once I get her done .

Re: Question for Starcraft Guru's

Yeah Rick, 80HP is plenty for a 16'er....I live in Erie, Pa and can hardly ever go full throttle on Lake Erie. There is almost always 3+ foot waves...Cruise most of the time in the low 20's...

Im shootin for 30-32 with a 50 on mine...

I would spot prime any areas that are down to bare metal. i just did this 2 weeks ago... check out my thread to see the paint.

That's dreamin' a little big Rick......granted my set-up could use some work but I'm only getting 35 out of my 85.
