More Questions...

Does anyone know if I have to pull the engine to replace the transom wood? Looks like the outdrive it hooked right to engine and is supported by engine mounts.

When I put the floor in last year, it looked like my stringers were metal. Can anyone confirm this? I don't think I saw any wood in there.

I wont swear to pulling the motor for the trnsom but the outdrive for sure . Your stringers are metal one of the bennies of a starcraft we dont hve to spend a month itching from fiberglass dust cause our stringers rotted away :D.

Re: Question for Starcraft Guru's

The outdrive attatches to the transom and the motor so at the least it would have to come out to change the transom. Mind you I have an outboard so I could be wrong on having to pull the motor . I honestly dont remember anybody pullin the motor on their Starcraft yet at least not an I/O setup although several of us have pulled our outboards :D. I know Northbeach just pulled his outdrive but I am pretty sure he didnt change his transom either .

Pretty sure you have to remove the OD as well as the gimbal ring (?) and housing from the transome...Then the misc stuff that is behind the motor at the transom wall..

May just be easier to do with the motor out..

Also bear in mind that once you remove the OD..You will need an alignment bar when you are ready to slide it back in..

Re: Question for Starcraft Guru's

He has a mercruiser though..I have an OMC Stringer which "Stringer" was founded by the drivetrain being mounted to the stringers so the engine and outdrive is trimmed by one motor in the front of the engine.....My transom wood is has a notch cut out around the intermediate housing...Looks like the outdrive boot is the only thing screwed into the transom...I will have to get some pics and post them...I need some before pics anyways right???

Re: Question for Starcraft Guru's

Wish I could convert it to Mercruiser, but no possible way for a Aluminum boat to patch the hole from the OMC Stringer drive. So I am stuck with it unless I get an offshore bracket and than get an outboard, but no reason to when I have a sound drivetrain.

thannah84 forgive my question on you?re post, but I have been pondering this not so much the OMC part but getting say a 60?s era and upgrading to a newer drive.

Couldn?t we weld or in my case have someone who can weld aluminum weld a patch in the hole from the sterndrive and then cut a new whole to match the new drive?

wvmedic...I had thought about rivetting a piece of alum in there, but welding would prolly be better. I am not considering swapping it to merc. I have a sound drivetrain, it is an OMC, but just rebuilt the outdrive and have many new engine parts....

Re: Question for Starcraft Guru's

Medic the main problem with welding up the transom is that welding aluminum hardens it and in an area like the transom you dont want that as it would lead to stress cracks .

Re: Question for Starcraft Guru's

thannah84 I do understand that, I wouldn?t change it either. If it is working good no need to change anything.

Rick, thanks I wasn?t sure if it would work or not.
