I just have a question for curiosities sake and for some amunition against the mechanic that did this for me.

I noticed that when I removed my waterpump to redo it again, after it still was not cooling right after a mechanic had done it, the seal at the top of the water pump housing was not there. This is the rubber piece that slides down the drive shaft to the top of the Water pump housing.

What would happen if this is not there? Will it leak air into the system and cause an overheat or would it leak water?

Here is a picture of the part that I am speaking of from the Merc Manual.

Thanks,

No one can say what this missing piece would do?

have you tried adding the piece to see if you overheat? My philosophy is the boat/car engineers are smarter than thou, so if the peice was supposed to be there, go get it or something not good will happen!

Re: Question on Alpha 1 GEN 2 waterpump

I don't have a clue why they put it there, rather to deflect water away from the upper seals if water squirts out of there, or if it just keeps it cleaner from exhaust gasses, who know for sure. Merc won't tell.
Anyway, it does not seal that good. And is not a cause of overheating in any way shape or form. I've pulled many of those drives apart and the seal is missing. Even knowing I put one on a year or 2 earlier. An overheat will take them out very quickly.

Thanks guys. I did put it on and I did test the water pump. Now I have another issue. I will start another thread.
