I'm running a full closed cooling system on my L-6 165 MC-1. My question is although i have a new drive raw water pump, How would i tell if the impeller or pump failed under way? How could i tell if i lost flow to mu riser before i cooked the exhaust flapper? Is there any type of flow switch or alarm system on the market for this? I realize the temp gauge will go up but it would probably be too late before noticed. thanks

It would overheat. Slightly slower, but it will overheat. The good thing is, the temp senders on raw water cooled engine don't usually show an overheat, simply because there isn't any water in them if the impeller fails completely. With a closed cooling system you always have antifreeze that stays there longer (till it boils out). Perfect time to put a temp alarm system in.

I hear ya on the temp alarm, again by the time it reaches the point to set the alarm i believe my exhaust flapper would be toast. What i was looking for is a type of alarm or flow switch i coul install into the raw water line going to the riser. Is there such a thing? thanks

I really think you are worrying over nothing. If your temp rises to 200 or 210? and sets off the alarm that should be well before any damage is done to anything. Keeping up with maintenance items like impellers, fluid levels and a few inspections of the manifolds and risers at years end.
