Hi,<br />Just paid a mechanic 600.00 to repair my 1977 70 hp Johnson. He said all 3 cylinders have 60 pounds of compression and as long as the coimpression is even it should run fine. Well it does run but I don't think it has the power it should and consumes lots of fuel. Another mechanic said it should have at least 140 pounds compression. What should normal compression be?The motor doesn't smoke or foul plugs. Thanks,Tom

Re: Question on compression

tom - get a compression guage and measure it yourself. I'm with jim on the 100 lbs as a target. If it is in fact 60 lbs you got screwed to the tune of $600.00 as the engine needs an overhaul and why any mechanic would do $600.00 work on an engine that needs an overhaul is beyond me.

Re: Question on compression

sounds like the mechanic duped you. yes it's true the similar #'s is important but that low of compression is not good at all. what did he do to fix it by the way? and yeah it won't have barely half the power it did originally. just my .02

Re: Question on compression

I did not think that a motor would run with compression that low does it run good when it warms up or does it lose power to the tune of a whole lot,
