I don't think you reverse jetpumps, Nodakr. I think you just swivel them around like the little old direct drive engines.

Good luck. :)

Nodakr,
Not sure about the outboards, but the IO jets I worked on had simple diverters. The adj. was made at the pump end of the control; it was basiclly a cable adjustment. Hope this helps.

L-T

As JB stated you don't reverse a jet. It has a reverse cup that is mounted on the discharge end of the foot. What year motor are we looking at. Also try "googleing" outboard jet pump maybe it will give you more of an idea of what is involved.

Re: Question on outboard/jetpump search???

When in forward position the reverse gate is tucked under the nozzle. When in neutral the gate
swings up to divert a happy medium of water in both directions. When in reverse the gate swings fully up catching the output stream and directing it pretty much all forward.

There is a technical alighnment procedure but this works quick, and done darn cheap.

What you do is tie off bow and stern to a solid dock. Then you start the engine in "Neutral" and watch what it does. If it tends to back up the the diverter is UP too far and is forcing more pump output forward than astern. Shut down, raise the motor and loosen the locking nut at the end of
control cable where it goes through the bracket. Take a few turns on the adjusting hollow nut that is threaded into the bracket standoff assembly such that the diverter is lowered slightly.

Tighten the lock nut back down. Drop the motor in
and start up again. Watch which way the boat tends to drift.... repeat adjustment until the boat remains "relatively" still at idle. They do tend to rock very slowly back and forth at idle even if perfectly adjusted.

With the motor off put the shift into forward. The reverse gate should snap all the way down under the output tube. Put the motor in reverse, the reverse gate should snap up to fully cover the
outside of the output tube. Note that the water jet output is from the outside ring of the tube.
the inside tube is the motor exhaust.

The little fins sticking up from the outside wall of the exhaust pipe into the water jet outflow are used to balance the thrust of the jet output by bending them slightly to divert the flow in the direction oposite the motor is "pulling". A very slight bend makes a BIG adjustment so don't snap em off...that is a bad adjustment.

Enjoy your jet. Take a trip out with the seller
if you can to get some seat time. Learn how to drive it well especially in turns before going balls to the wall. Don't let just anyone drive it without full instruction. Jets perform quite differently from prop boats and have some ugly surprises for the unprepared.

Always remember when you pull back that throttle to neutral that "no thrust equals NO steering".

Now get out there and "suck some crawdads".

Kennebec River Guide
www.kennebecriverguide.com

Re: Question on outboard/jetpump search???

Hey, do a www. and an iboats search for "Outboard Jet". You'll find a lot of excellent information. Try to find the company's phone number (I don't have it off hand, but it's out there somewhere -Outboard Jets Corp. in San Leandro, Ca.) then give them a phone call. They'll mail you literature, with diagrams, on the jet pump and it will tell you how to set up and adjust.

Kennebec's description above is excellent, but there's more than one type of control bracket, depending on how old hte jet is and what outboard it's made for.

It's actually a little tricky, and I recommend either having someone show you or get the literature with diagrams. You need to be a little careful. The danger (small, but there) is that if it's not adjusted correctly, the reverse cup (AKA Boot) will inadvertantly hang too low when it's supposed to be in the full-up/forward position. If that happens, the water stream can grab it pull it down into full reverse - and this could happen when going at speed, causing mayhem. I've never actally seen this happen, but my mechanic as well as the guys at Outboard Jet who I talked to on the phone, warned me about this possibility.

But, the adjustment really is simple. In my experience with an outboard and inboard jet, it's tough to get a decent "neutral" position though. You just have to live with some forward thrust in neutral. Have fun.

I gave the positions opposite to what they are: full down on the reverse cup/gate is the forward thrust position. The cup is full up, covering the nozzle, for reverse. But the danger, as has been warned me by others, is the same if not adjusted properly. Sorry about the confusion.

Re: Question on outboard/jetpump search???

Thanks guys for all the help, sorry I'm so slow to respond.I did do some major adjustments to the gate. Before I started adj,the gate was way low in neutral pos. After setting the gate up several turns on the link.rod I now have come pretty close to neutral position.I am injoying the boat very much so far,its a 1996 Willie Preditor,w/115,1991 merc jet pump,I'd post a pic but haven't figured out how so far.I also just bought a 4hp merc kicker for the boat.It matches the 115 pretty close, the only problem I'm having is finding out for sure what yr it is.The ser# is A810051 and has 4hp stickers on it.the locall merc dealer in my area tells me it's a 4.5 and for some reason can't tell me the yr it is???They say it's somewhere around a 1987 to 89??Any help on this would be appreceiated..I'm going to ck in the search section and see if I can figure something out. Thanks again for all the help!!!!!!
