I'm a newbie with a couple questions I was hoping you could help me with. I recently got a 1999 Rinker Flotilla, boats in decent shape but the outdrive and engione had been removed. Owner was sure a 5.7 came out of it but the out drive he was not so sure about. I have a Marine Power 5.7 that a friend had sitting in storage, so got an engine to put back in. The outdrive I need to hunt down. I took a picture of the transom shield and the serial number on the outside is DL291981. Can anyone help me identify what was previously on there? Also what gear ration should I be looking for to match up with my 5.7? Thanks for a great site and I'm sure I'll have a million questions and will keep you abreast of my progress.

That Marine Power motor, may not marry up to yer Mercruiser stuff that easily, dependin' on what application it came outa...

Re: Question on Type of Mercruiser Outdrive

Thanks for the quick response Bond-O. Attached a couple of crappy pictures of the engine, havn't brought over to the garage yet. What you think, looks like it's built for a mercruiser? Couple more questions, there is no coupler, do you know which coupler it would use. Also typically what size lag bolts hold down the front engine mount bracket, they are missing, stainless?

Whats your thoughts on an Alpha drive Gen II, work okay with a V-8? Sorry for all the questions, very little information available on this boat, emailed Rinker and Mr Rinker actually called me back but they had no literarature available on the boat just what he could recall. Thanks again

Re: Question on Type of Mercruiser Outdrive

Here is a chart of the ratios of the drives for each engine. Yours should have a 1.5:1 ratio.

Click on this link from the Sticky at the beginning of this forum, there are several links in there that will help guide you to what you had in there

Generally the older 350 engines were called the Mercruiser 260

So do the Alpha I Gen II drives not use a water pump on the engine? Engine I currently have has a crankshaft driven raw water pump, trying to figure if it will be used or not

Re: Question on Type of Mercruiser Outdrive

You have worse problems than which water pump to use. Since it's an EFI, you need to find out from Marine Power if the ECM is set up so a shift interrupt system can be installed. Without that system, shifting is going to be difficult at best.

Don can you tell me more about the shift interrupt system, the engine haf a MEFI 4 system, guess I can always go to a good old carb if I need to.

Re: Question on Type of Mercruiser Outdrive

Here is a thread I put together some time ago on how and why the shift interrupt system work. While your will be different depending on the how it's put together, but the reason for the system and what it does is basically the same.

Re: Question on Type of Mercruiser Outdrive

Thanks, now I understand. Just for discussion sake will a Bravo transom assembly fit in the same opening in the transom or is a new/different shaped opening required? I have a complete VolVO Penta transom and outdrive sitting in the garage, just figured it would be easier to fit the right drive back on the boat

The cutout is the same as the Bravo, and the Volvo SX/DP-S drives.

It appears that at this point what was in there before really is not going to have a whole lot of bearing on what you're next engine set up is going to be, But just for a reference point for you, the old engine set up looked like this when new,

ENG: 0L093810 Model # 4M11025LS MERCRUISER 5.0L ALPHA 5.0L ALPHA
DRV: 0L195496 Model # 5121300LS MERCRUISER ALPHA 1.62:1
TRN: 0L291981 Model # 6111001LS MERCRUISER ALPHA TRANSOM
Boat Model: 240 FLOTIL, 1999, Out of MARCO ISLAND FL.

Re: Question on Type of Mercruiser Outdrive

But pulling all the parts together to see what I have and don't have to get an engine and outdrive on this Flotilla. I have talked myself into putting my Volvo SX transom shield and outdrive on this boat thanks to Dons information regarding the transom opening. Like to hear some thoughts on this idea, more labor but I will save some dollars if I can pull it off.

One question I do have is regarding my Marine Power engine. If has an MEFI 4 EFI systems and the TB is a fly by wire type syste, Any leads where I could find a Potentiometer to drive the TB motor? I googled all night last night and came up empty. Anyone with experience in this type system would really apreciate the advice/lead. I will keep posting my progress on the swap, thanks

Re: Question on Type of Mercruiser Outdrive

Sounds like a good idea to me, you can still use your EFI system without changing anything, the raw water pump will work, you don't need a shift interrupt system and the drive is well capable of handling the HP. What's the gear ratio on the drive? Is is SX or DP?

Not sure what you mean by fly by wire, you still have to use a cable to operate the throttle linkage, and depending on the engines harness connection, my connect to the helm harness for gauges and ignition with no problems. The throttle and shift control will work, may have to change a couple things, but nothing major.

Re: Question on Type of Mercruiser Outdrive

Don,

The drive is a SX, gear ratio is 1.66:1, will that work for this swap? The EFI sysyem Marine Power used has so throttle linkage on the TB, just an electrical connection. There is a motor that operated the throttle and is powered by a potentiometer. The throttle cable goes to a bracket with the potentiometer attached .. Found one for MEFI 5 below, but nothing for MEFI 4.

Can you tell me what size lag bolts go to the engine moint bracket, are they stainless?

Re: Question on Type of Mercruiser Outdrive

I moved this over to the Volvo forum since it's not going to be a Mercruiser anymore.
3/8" Galvanized lag bolts will work fine.

Here is the gear ratio's for Volvo. As you can see you have the ratio for a 4.3 or (not shown) the older 5.0L Fords.
If you do decide to change ratio's, you can do that by just replacing the lower unit. Your best bet would to look for a 1.95 Duo Prop drive. Then, you would have something.

Re: Question on Type of Mercruiser Outdrive

Don,

I was mistaken, pulle the drive out from the corner and the tag has a 1.60 on it with a PN of 3858881 near as I can tell, kind of tough to read. Will this work out better till I can come across a DP?

Re: Question on Type of Mercruiser Outdrive

I'll "Work" as in you can install it and it will make the boat go forward and backward, but if you get it propped right for WOT, then it will probably be slow getting on plane, if you prop it to get on plane like it should, your rpm will be way too high.
That's why they have different gear ratio's for different engines.

Re: Question on Type of Mercruiser Outdrive

Thanks again Don, so a 1:95 DP lower end is the best bet and it will work with my top end. I do apreciate the time you have taken and the great advice.
