Re: Question on Type of Mercruiser Outdrive

Thanks again Don, so a 1:95 DP lower end is the best bet and it will work with my top end.

Absolutely it will work, Once you run a Volvo DuoProp with the correct ratio and props for the engine, you will never be satisfied with anything else, so be careful.

Re: Question on Type of Mercruiser Outdrive

I've been spending time reconditioning my transom shield for a volvo outdrive. Got it all tore down and got the crust off it in prep for some new paint, I'll get some pictures up soon. As I have been looking for a DP lower unit with a 1:95 gear ratio a question arose regarding compatability. My Transom Shield and upper unit are from a 1999 SX, what year(s)/type lower unit is compatable. I ask because I saw one on ebay that stated " a 2006 or newer upper unit required". Didn't want to buy one that I can't use. Thanks again for the assist. Is it possible for me to change the subject of this thread?

Re: Question on Type of Mercruiser Outdrive

2006 was the first year of a new design, SX-A and DPS-A, and nothing is interchangeable with your SX / DP-S drive and transom shield.

This pictures should show the difference.

Re: Question on Type of Mercruiser Outdrive

I'm chipping away at getting this engine and outdrive ready for an install and had a couple more questions. First, the crank driven raw water pump is a mercruiser style pump, I also have a new volvo pump on the garage shelf. Will the mercruiser style pump work fine with the volvo outdrive? Much cleaner to use that one since all the hoses match as well as the brackets to reatain the pump from spinning. Engine has a half fresh water cooling system, so lots of hoses. Second question is the power steering pump, I have a volvo pump, but the current pump with the detached resovior installs perfectly and the drive pully lines up good. If I install the volvo pump I will have to fab all the brackets and get the belt alignment right. The brackets I have have for the volvo pump are on the wrong side of the engine. really appreciuate any advice you can provide.

Still hunting for the DP lower unit, the ones I do find are outside the old budget and the ones I find within budget on CL are out of the area and they don't want to mess with shiping. The hunt is on.

Re: Question on Type of Mercruiser Outdrive

Mercruiser has never used a crankshaft mounted raw water pump. The pump that is on your engine in the pictures above is not a Mercruiser if that is the one you meant. It's also the pump used by Volvo on all the V8 engines 93 and earlier, so it should work fine for your application, including the fresh water cooling system.

You should be able to use the PS pump you have on the engine for the Volvo transom assembly. The most you would need is different hoses if the fittings are different.

Re: Question on Type of Mercruiser Outdrive

Thanks Don, that help a lot. I have a follow on question if I could, where is the part number located on a volvo penta lower unit? Is it near the top by the input shaft? Mine has a PN 385549312, however I cannot find any reference to it. I ask because I have a few leads on a couple DP lower units, however the owners are preety oblivious to gear ratios and I want to verify the at 1:95. Once again, thanks

Re: Question on Type of Mercruiser Outdrive

There is no visible part number on the lower units. Only the model/serial/ratio tag mounted on the upper.

On the 250 through the DP-E, the tag is located on the upper gear box, just in front of the top cap of the gear box.
On the SX/SPS style, it's on the port side. Low on the upper just behind the trim cylinder.

Re: Question on Type of Mercruiser Outdrive

Did find a service bulletin that shows some stamp numbers in the aft part of the lower unit that gives the ratio.

You have a Marine Power 5.7 Throttle body with a mefi 4? I take it they both came together from marine power as a package. Do you have any ideal how old the engine is?

Thanks Don. TG the engine is a 2006 model and the MEFI 4 system came with it. I did talk with George at MP and he verified that the engine was built with an EFI system and a MEFI controller. He was a really helpful guy, he helped me sort out the electronic throttle piece and the wiring configuration for the Throttle Control Module for controlling the throttle body throttle motor.

Re: Question on Type of Mercruiser to Volvo Outdrive

Looking for some more advice as I'm putting the final touches on my engine. Before I bolted up my high pressure fuel pump thought I should check it out and sure enough it was all seized up. Tapped it a few times and I get it to come on intermittently, but it needs replacing. The exact replacement is over 350 dollars, seems pretty steep. I found a Mallory on iboats (Mallory In Line Fuel Pump 9-35430) for 190 dollars, just looking to see if anyone has used this pump and if so how did it work out. If anyone has another suggested pump like to hear about that also. Appreciate any advice, anxious to fire this engine up and see how it runs, thanks

You have to get a pump that puts out the same pressure your old pump did. Lots of those pumps look the same on the outside, but run different pressures.

Re: Question on Type of Mercruiser to Volvo Outdrive

I would give the vendor a call again and ask him for the part. That is a custom calibration in that mefi 4 and calls for a spefic fuel pressure...To little to much wont work... neither merc or volvo used mefi in 06 and there systems are different...mechancailly that is..Maybe it was calibrated for a merc system or volvo or who know's.

Re: Question on Type of Mercruiser to Volvo Outdrive - Need Some Advice

Got the engine running this weekend after a couple false starts (or non starts!) Thanks to the folks at Marine power, even though I wasn't buying a new engine from them they we're super helpful, can't say enough good things about George at Marine Power. Turns out the engine sat so long the fuel injectors had glazed over and were clogged. Sent them to a place in Jersey and they did ultrasonic cleaning, installed them and it fired right up, neighbors weren't too happy, but I was ecstatic. Pretty loud with straight pipes sitting on a stand.

I do need a little assistance, staring taking out the Alpha transom shield so I could install my Volvo Transom Shield in and I'm stuck, or it is stuck. Got everything disconnected, got the Y-Pipe off, removed all the bolts and the adapter that bolts to the shield, but can't seem to break it free from the transom. If I take a pry bar outside the boat I can pull the bottom a half inch or so, but can't get the top to budge. Ever run into a problem like this, any suggestions? I don't like the pry bar method, don't want to damage the outside of the boat. Transoms in great shape, all the wood is solid no rot at all, just stuck. Appreciate any suggestions
