Re: Question----parts still available
Hi Ryan,
Although it's possible some new gears, etc. are available, you'd have to luck out and find a dealer who's more interested in liquidating 30-year old inventory than one who's selling at retail prices. The cost of buying new gears for your motor would be much more than the motor was worth on the open market. However, if you're planning on keeping the motor and weigh the cost against a new motor, and do the work yourself, you might come out ahead - but then you have to take into account the fact that you likely don't have the special tools required to properly disassemble the unit, you'll need a manual, you're still running a 30-year old powerhead, and it would be much more economical to either find a used lower unit, or find a similar motor and use yours for parts.
As for bearings, pretty much any Mercury bearing is still available, either through a dealer or aftermarket through Kaman Bearing or the like. Take your old bearings and seals with you and they can match them up.
Also, there are no gears in the powerhead - what gears are you referring to? The only gears in the opper part of the motor are the throttle advance gears and those with the shifting mechanism under the carb... neither of which strip out very often...
- Scott
