Every project I take on is questionable, but they usually come out good in the end!

Plenty of questionables with this project. Thankfully they all have turned out good, IE stringers, transom, motor ;)

Still no phone call, may just ride up there. I wantin some Wendys burgers anyways. lol

I'll post pics of motor in my resto thread.

Re: Questionable Project Mercruiser 5.7L What to do?

I have recently purchased a fixer-upper, a 96 Bayliner Capri 2050LS 40th Anniversary Edit.

#1 Pull motor and remove broken bolt, check to see if motor will turn and if so run a compression test and any other possible test there is. If all checks out, reinstall and continue.
#2 If motor appears seized, should I rebuild or replace with long block? I have found long blocks for $1200 with 2 year warranty and the cost of rebuild parts to be around $1000. I would call myself an intermediate mechanic, but I have only rebuilt an engine once and I had assistance.
#3 Its not worth it, I will have more tied up in the boat than it would be worth if it was in good running condition. Get rid of it for what I can get out of it, and forget about owning a boat until I can afford a really good boat. Which I will probably pay more for a really good boat than it would cost me to fix this one and I will be on the water much sooner and no boat payment. ;)

I had planned on keeping the boat for several years and try to get the most out of it. It is plenty big and should have plenty of power for what I need. Just stuck in this crossroad of man vs machine...oh and Mr. Bill Fold is there too.

Thank you for taking the time to read my long paragraph,
Seth

Good choice there with keeping it. I was at the same crossroads myself and decided to keep mine and restore it,,, biggest reason for it.. NO PAYMENTS!! cant beat that,,, Looking foward to seeing your progress!

Thank you kindly house. Your right, no payments lol

On my way to getting the floor put back in, and if the machine shop will ever get done with my motor it will be put together too.
I have a lot of plans for this boat, and a long winter to work on it. Regrettably I havnt taken many pictures of the progress, but I will update once I have something worth updating.

Hey, before you put the floor back in check the stringers and transom for rot. Drill them in a few spots (but don't drill through to daylight) and make sure you get dry wood. If you do get dry results just fill the holes in. If you don't, say arrgh and go learn about structural repair.

Oh by the way, you will LOVE running that boat when you get it together.

I have drilled all over and its all dry yellowish wood. I got 3 tubes of 5200 the other day and came to find out on the way home that once you open the tube you have to use it within 48 hours or it will harden. Just dont have a lot of use for it at the moment and dont want to waste it. I cant buy the 4200 locally or even the 5200, I had to drive an hour and a half to find the 5200.

I need to order some Perfect Seal anyways so 4200 will be going in the cart with it.

The machine shop called yesterday and said that my motor will be rdy for pickup this afternoon. FINALLY! lol
Thatll be some good before and after pics.

I think I will love it just because I can say, "I did this."
Ill update my resto thread after my 3 days off.
