Questions about a 72 Johnson

Hi,<br /><br />I Have a 1972 Johnson 100 HP and I am wondering if it has as electric shift lower unit or not? I am getting ready to rebuild the water pump and want to know if I will have to deal with a shifter rod or electrical conections. Also are there any DO NOT DO tips that I should know about before I start?<br /><br />Thanks, Ben

the shifter wires are connected through a switch inside your shifter and go to the engine and down inside the foot. There are two solenoids in the foot that they operate. Johnson had some problems with this. I had several and was successful at fixing them. The wires usually rott off inside the foot at the top of the assembly, making it next to impossible to repair, Good luck. you're gonna need it.

look on the port side of the enging block down towards the pan. You will see the 2 wires going down into the housing. Trace them up and you should find connectors. Disconnect the wires and tie a strong string to them before you drop the lower unit. Use the string to pull the wires back up when you reinstall.

I'm not real familiar with the electric shift, but from what I understand, you need to follow the wires up from the lower unit and find out where they connect. Disconnect them. You would then tie a piece of twine or wire to the ones going to the lower unit to keep them from falling into the lower unit. That way you can pull them back up as you install the lower unit. Otherwise it could be tuff if they fall inside the lower unit. Others know much more about these motors and will respond with better info.

thats right you tie a piece of string to them and pull off the foot. and use it as a pull wire to reinstall. and you should see them coming up in the engine compartment. mark one with tape to know which is which. simply unplug them. Sorry i ws confused before. Be careful during the reinstall. I know good techs that have let them go astray and get wrapped around the shaft and get broken off afterwards. The plug at the top that acts as a seal can also be difficult to pull through the housing. again ... good luck
