I have been given an old Evinrude"Elto" out board, model 4256- 03691. I was told that this is a 1935 engine of unknown HP. Is it a 1935 and what is the HP? Also, is it water cooled; no water entrances, It runs but seems to get very hot. What would the oil/gas ratio be?

Re: Questions about old Evinrude

Model 4256 is a 1938 Evinrude or Elto Model "Ace". 1.8 HP. A highly collectable motor. Could bring a couple hundred on E-bay. It probably won't run long without a new coil, but you never know. I didn't look up the specs, but I would imagine it should run an a 16:1 oil ratio.

Yes, its water cooled. If it gets real hot it probably needs a new water pump. Don't run it long....don't want to ruin a classic.

Contact the AOMCI.org and they can tell you all the little details.

Re: Questions about old Evinrude

Many thanks for the reply. I don't plan to run it very much at all. The only thing I had to do to it was clean out the carb and the gas tank; very little rust inside of it. I did repaint the tank and left every thing else alone. Put grease in the foot. There was the word"grease" by the hole in the foot. Again thanks for the info and I will contact the AOMCI.
