Re: questions about tides

Wish I had $.02 to throw in Brooke but the only time I see a high or low tide is when the river on which I live, Ohio River, floods. :D

Much good luck with your report!! I'm sure an Ace is in the cards for ya'.

Re: questions about tides

Brooke, here in Auckland New Zealand the tides do indeed affect peoples lives every day.
At present it's holiday time for our school children and it's also summer.
The days are hot and the nights are hot and humid.
High tide brings out families by the hundreds to the local beaches. It also attracts the folk off work after hours.
The tide conditions also have a direct effect on our weather, the associated wind patterns help bring cool fresh onshore conditions, or through transvaporation they bring humid hot air to our shores.
There's also the psychological aspects, here almost all around the city of Auckland you can see the water and when it's high tide I know everybody talks about it. Either seeing it in on their way to work or during breaks. Nothing picks up the spirits quite like a nice calm high tide.
I work in psychiatry and a trip to the beach has an amazing calming effect on my clients!
Ross

Re: questions about tides

Brooke: Here on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico, we only get one tide a day. High and low tides are usually about 12 Hours apart. The tides affect fishing greatly, since the water has to be moving to stir the bait out of the weeds, grass, etc. We have two rivers emptying into our bay {Mobile Bay} and the tide also affects the water level in them for about 30 miles up. If you've studied the Civil War, you'll know that Mobile was invaded by the Union Fleet. They could only come into the bay when the tide was high so they could get across the sand bars. That's when Admiral Farragut made his famous quote " Dang! Torpedoes! Full speed Ahead!".

Re: questions about tides

Hi Brooke and like everyone else Welcome Aboard!

I'm only going to address #3

Brooke
3. how are peoples lives affected by the tides?
Ralph and Ross J
Answered that very well and are saving me a ton of typing :)
This is another way that the tides could affect or enhance peoples lives..

I live in Western Washington (west coast) USA
Look up the Narrows a small passage of water under the Narrows Bridge. In the Puget Sound area the water flow is the fastest in our area! The same system we use with damns could be used here. Water turbines to create electricity! Using only the incoming and out going tides! Gods Creations if you will.
Darn. I sound like PW here :D
