Quick anchor size Question

I am thinkin of replacing my navy style anchor with a fluke anchor for better holding power per pound. This question may seen silly but with a 19ft boat should I get an anchor rated for 15 to 19 ft boat or the one rated for 20-24ft.? It doesnt seem to be a likely problem but someone here probably understands the reasons for rating better. Thanks.

Re: Quick anchor size Question

What are you going to anchor in? that is what kinda bottom?
And in what kind of water?
If you're going to anchor in a cove with a sandy bottom, the smaller one will work just fine.
If you're going to anchor in mud with a current, better use the bigger one.

both. mostly lakes but at least twice a year in salt water. I think the bigger one sounds like a better choice. My navy anchor slips alot. I think going back to a fluke will grab better. Just wanted to make sure I didn't go too big if that's even possible.

Re: Quick anchor size Question

Get the larger fluke anchor. It will weigh a few pounds more, but will hold a lot better. Chain will also help it hold better.

Re: Quick anchor size Question

yes, i use between 3 -4ft of chain, it helps stabilize the anchor so it sits on the bottom while it digs in. sorry for the 2nd post...i should learn to read first!

Re: Quick anchor size Question

I currently have 4ft of chain so thats no prob. Just need the fluke and I'll be set. Contemplate getting a coated fluke just for the sake of the hull but decided on galvanized for the savings. Either way, the big fluke should hold much better than the Coated Navy and be much lighter also

Re: Quick anchor size Question

I would go with the biggest one that would fit in the anchor compartment and make sure you can close it:D

two anchors of the same design wouldn't be necessary. Just get the larger anchor if you are worries, between 4-6 feet of chain. The chains most important job on the danforth/fluke anchors is to make sure that the anchor doesn't land vertically on its head, instead more horizontally allowing the forks to swing out like teeth and dig right into the bottom, instead of behing dragged on top after the anchor lands on its head.

Anchor compartment? What's that?
If I ever find the right hatch, I'll make one in the front of the 'Ray.

Re: Quick anchor size Question

While we're on the subject of anchor compartments it sure would be nice if I could rig somr type of automatic/ assisted rope retrieval spool. When we anchor in deep water it is a major pain rolling the rope back up. I roll it up if over 30 feet was let out so it won't get knotted and tangled. Something like a bait cast reel but bigger wouold be nice. Anyone know of something like this that could fit in the compartmment? Not with a crank or anything just maybe a like a clock spring that would wind/ tighten up when the rope is out and could restore itself to resting position when rope is pulled back in.

Re: Quick anchor size Question

I recomend a 4 pound Fortress FX-7 rated for boats to 27 feet. I have about 10 anchors. Some came with the saftey package with my boat some I bought and some were given to me.

Since we got the Fortress FX-7 we have used no other anchor. It not a cheap anchor but will not rust and the mud does not stick to it at all.
Most important is it digs in faster and deeper than any anchor I have.
Also important is the Wife can pull it with out hurting her hands.

Chain really does not help much at all if you use normal scope. It does stop the line from being cut from sharp rocks or corel.

Chain is a must if like most you use a short scope like 3 to 1.

I still carry 2 anchors The Fortress 4 Pound FX-7 and A Danforth 8 pound but the danforth will never be used unless we somehow loose the Frotress. One has 250 foot of line and the other has 300 foot of line.

Both the Coast Guard and Navy rated number one in there test.
Also Power boat magizne.
They Sell them Here at Iboats.
