hi everyone ! i'm new to this forum.i've got a problem with the forward and reverse on my control box.as in when i go to put it in reverse it feels very stiff to move it and sometimes when i'm on the water at full throttle if i go to slow it down, again it is stiff and won't go into neutral.the engine is a 60hp mercury 1996.
out of the water the throttle lever moves ok in forward but is stiff in reverse.
i have disconnected the forward and reverse cables from the engine and now the throttle lever moves smoothly both ways.any ideas as to why the throttle lever is stiff in reverse, when normally connected ?

Re: quicksilver control box problems

Time for a new shift cable.

The inner lining of the cable housing has a groove worn in it from the wire movement back and forth. It moves freely with no load while disconnected. Put a load on it and the wire pushes and pulls into that groove and becomes stiff.

Re: quicksilver control box problems

g'day Fletcher.
I had a similar problem with my 2004 60hp EFI 4 STROKE. Have a read of my post that i posted today.
It seems my problem is in the gear box, spring related. Seems the spring is loaded very heavily. Gear selection is spring loaded to hold in fwd, spring then works against you to get into reverse. ie you have to compress that same spring to get to reverse. I have already busted 1 control box. Luckily i was able to get replacement parts from a wreckers, but my problem persists. My mechanic has had not luck with info my mercury regaring how much pressure there should be. Anyone got any other ideas?
cheers
Dean

i like the sound of your advice :) where would you guess this 'groove ' might be .near the control box,the outboard or else where.
