Quieting down the beast!

How can you quiet down a big inline motor? I know they're pretty loud regardless, but how quiet can you get them? Does the rubber exhaust leg seal in the lower unit have anything to do with it?

I don't think there is much to be done. You shouldn't really be hearing exhaust while in the water though.

One reason it is loud is because of the type of shrouding mercury used. It is really thin and there is really no insulating properties to it.

You could buy a new jacket that goes inside the cowling to muffle noise a bit. I'm going to do this for my '71 4 cyl 80hp. They are like 20 bucks.

1987 115hp...I just found some threads on "alternate" materials to lay in under the hood for sound dampening if I can't find the original material
